Our Mountain From Our Backyard

..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

August 30 - Fifty-Eight Years:
Tomorrow marks 58 wonderful years with my beautiful bride - these photos are from our first cruise from San Francisco to Alaska - we hope to cruise again when the world is safe again.

...

August 29 - NMWS Fall Exhibition:
Steve Griggs, our juror, selected two of my new watercolors to be in the NMWS Fall Exhibition. I'm anxious to find out how well my new style and floater frames will be accepted in this show.

...

August 28 - Watercolor Society Meeting:
This morning, we had our second "in person" watercolor society meeting since early 2019. The Pandemic had put a stop to inperson gatherings. Today's demo by John Comier showed us how he created the paths of light that make his watercolors so beautiful.

...

August 27 - Friday Painter's:
Our Friday Painter's got together for another ZOOM Critique. All agreed that It was one of our best so far. I have not painted in the last two weeks - so I posted the four watercolors that I just entered into the Kansas National in Wichita. The juro for the exhibition is Stephen Zhang. He does fantastic portraits - I will find out later if he likes any of mine.

...

August 26 - 16 Innings:
My favorite Dodger, Will Smith hit a homer to tie the game at 1 - 1 --- But we were up till 2:00 AM to see the dodgers win last nights game. Walker Buehler and Blake Snell were both brilliant on Wednesday night, but they were long forgotten by the time this one ended. The Dodgers beat the Padres 5-3 in 16 innings at Petco Park, the longest extra-inning game since the new format started in 2020. AJ Pollock hit a two-run home run off reliever Daniel Camarena — the Padres’ ninth pitcher of the night — in the 16th inning for the game-winner.

...

August 25 - More Entries:
I just entered four paintings into the Kansas National Watercolor Exhibition at Mark Arts in Wichita, Kansas. I missed getting into this exhibition last year - perhaps I'll have better luck this year. The juror, Stephen Zhang is a fantastic portrait artist - I hope he sees something in my entries.

...

August 23 - Indian Market:
We spent a wonderful morning on Sunday at the Indian Market in Santa Fe - It was a great day to see all the creations.

...

August 22 - Opening Cancelled:
I will not be sending out any invitations to the exhibition at the New Mexico Cancer Center. I just received word that the opening reception planned for Friday, September 3rd has been cancelled due to the rapid increase in Covid infections. Even though 80 % of our state has received at least their first dose - things continue to get worse. I'm told that the exhibition will be on-line. I'll post information about the virtual presentation later. Please stay safe.

...

August 20 - Ready For My Exhibition:
My 16 paintings are now loaded in the car for my exhibit at the New Mexico Cancer Center tomorrow.

...

ZOOM Critique Continues:
With Covid picking up again the church we paint at has closed down again. So our Friday Painter's Group has gone back to doing critiques on ZOOM. Since 25 % of our state has yet to get their first shot on the vaccine our governor is requiring mast for all indoor spaces. For us, we are looking forward to our third dose.

...

August 18 - Gallery For A Cause:
On Saturday I'm hanging sixteen of my watercolors at the New Mexico Cancer Center.

...

August 17 - Yesterday:
I got a special Thank You in the mail yesterday - I did a portrait of Pavina's daughter and shipped it to her - what was extra special was that her daughter Penelope signed the card herself. It's nice to keep in touch with my students and their growing families.

...

August 16 - Dust Cover:
My first dust cover - Thank You Linda - I would have never thought of Mod Podge to glue the paper down My first dust cover was a success. The next ones will be even better because I found some heavier brown craft paper to use.

...

August 15 - Paintings Ready:
Yesterday, I framed my varnished watercolors- they are ready to deliver tomorrow to the gallery at UNM. The mats and the paintings are both sealed with both spray and then brushed on varnish. No plexiglass is needed - I believe I'm going to like this new method of presentation.

...

August 14 - My New Watercolors:
These are my three entries into the NMWS Fall Exhibition. All three has a base of "Gesso Juice" and are presented without plexiglass. Each is in a floater frame - I believe they make a beautiful presentation.

...

Saturday ZOOM Critique:
My artist friends still get together "On-Line" to share our painting progress with each other.

...

August 13 - The Art of Fresco:
I had to leave this mornings ZOOM Critique early because I had an appointment to see the progress on our cities "Fresco Project". We are fortunate to have a master like Frederico Vigil in New Mexico. When finished, the fresco will encase a circular staircase in the convention center. The fresco will illustrate the New Mexico landscape, it's agricultural history, plus the rich history of winemaking.

...

August 12 - Floater Frames:
Here is the first of four floater paintings - I varnished the first one today. I'll attach it to the frame tomorrow. I have weights on three more watercolors today waiting for them to dry. I think I'm going to like displaying my watercolors this way rather than under plexiglass. I used acrylic gel medium to glue the painting to the MDF boards and later I used spray varnish to protect my painting.

...

August 11 - What A Mess:
I made quite a mess cutting the MDF boards to fit into my new floater Frames - tomorrow I'll try mounting my new watercolors to the boards

...

August 10 - Framed Watercolors:
I'm getting a little bit done today. I now have all 16 watercolors framed and ready to hang at the NM Cancer Center on August 20th.

...

August 9 - Blossom:
Blossom loves to play in the evening while we are watching our Dodgers play baseball. Blossom had to interupt My bride while she was putting a hem on a new baby quilt.

...

August 8 - NMAEA Entries:
I just entered two of my most recent watercolors into the "2021 NMAEA Member Exhibition". The exhibit will be at Masley Gallery on the UNM Campus. The exhibition opens August 23rd - and there is a "Closing Reception" at 6:00 pm on September 29th.

...

August 7 - Drawing is Important:
This morning the NMWS in Albuquerque had our first "in-person" meeting since the pandemic started. Steve Borbas did a very successful presentation. Everyone got to draw - we need to do this more often. Thank You Steve.

...

August 4 - Day Trip to Santa Fe:
We decided to drive to Santa Fe this morning - to buy some flowers at "Jack-a-Lope", to visit the sculpture we saw under construction last week, and of course to shop at "Double Take" and have a wonderful lunch at "Tomasita's".

...

August 3 - My Exhibition:
Here is an early invitation to an exhibit I'm in at the NM Cancer Center - I will have 16 watercolors on display at reasonable prices - it's for a very good cause. Please try to attend the opening reception Friday, Sept 3rd from 6 - 8:30 pm. Many more artists will have their work on display as well.

...

August 2 - Meeting In Person:
This coming Saturday will be the first "in-person" meeting for the New Mexico Watercolor Society since the pandemic started. I invited Steve Borbas to present at this meeting. Steve will describe how he did architectural drawings on his visits to countries around the world. He will sak our members to each try their hand at drawing from slides he will project. Drawing materials will be supplied. We hope everyone will join in.

...

August 1 - Artist At Work:
I made a few corrections on my newest watercolor"Artist at Work" - I photographed it so I can enter it into the NMWS Fall Exhibition.
