MasterWorks Deadline (1/31):

I finished my new watercolor of "Pink Roses" this morning in my Friday Painters group. I have not painted much lately because I've been too busy getting everyones entries together for MasterWorks New Mexico - my file manager job will be over soon because today is the entry deadline.

Saint Pete (1/29):
If there is a Heaven - then, I know Pete Seeger is already leading a protest movement up there in the clouds. He is most likely teaching folk songs to a choir of angels.

Beautiful Morning (1/26):
There was a beautiful New Mexico sunrise when I let Blossom out this morning. I shot photos of both the sunrise and the moon in the early morning sky.

Pink Roses (1/24):
I started on a new watercolor this morning. My reference is a photo I took at Butchart Gardens in Victoria, (British Columbia) in Canada. I'm starting out very loose on a sheet of handmade paper. I coated it with gesso first. I've removed the liquid mask that I applied to protect the whites. Next, I'll start blending the edges.

Art at the Center (1/23):
I'm entering four watercolors into the "Juried Exhibition" called Art at the Center in Overland Park, Kansas. I've had good luck getting into that show before. The exhibit runs from April 4th until June 8th at the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center.

...

Entries For Las Cruces (1/22):
The NMWS has a growing chapter in Southern New Mexico. I'm entering three watercolors into the Spring Juried Show down there. The exhibition will be at the Branigan Cultural Center in May.

...

Begonia Finished (1/21):

I finished the "Golden Gate Begonia" that I started yesterday morning. I let it dry over night, then added a few touches before adding the line work.

Wet-n-Wet Begonia Started (1/20):
This morning, I'm going to try painting this Begonia image again. This time I'm trying a wet-n-wet method Jeanne Hyland taught our Saturday Painters Group.. I'll soak the paper well and place it on a soaked Shamwow cloth on top of a sheet of plexi glass. It should stay damp for hours as I paint. The Begonia subject demands the soft effects this approach should produce. My photo was taken, back in December, while we were in Golden Gate park in San Francisco.

Scholastic Art Awards (1/18):

Scholastic Art Awards "At Large Judging" was today - I got to judge in several categories: Jewelry, Architecture, Mixed Media, 7&8 Grade and Sculpture catagories. Lots of old friends were there to help and I got to meet new several people as well. I'm so glad to see the New Mexico Art Education Association step up and make this all happen. It's going to grow and get bigger each year.

"Couple Shadows"

Couple Shadows - San Francisco (1/17):
This morning, I finished my second watercolor of a couple walking past Union Square in San Francisco. I shot the photos I used a reference from the tenth floor of our hotel. It was early morning so there were long shadows cast by the figures far below.

First Full Moon This Year (1/16):

Yesterday, I caught a photo of the full moon peeking over our mountain. It came over the Sandia as we were sitting down to dinner.
...

Donated Art (1/15):
Each year I donate a watercolor for the RAEA Silent Auction at NAEA. I'm taking a watercolor of a Begonia this year to San Diego. Last year I took a painting of a Hollyhock to Fort Worth. They used a photo of my last years donation in the ad for this years auction.

Dream Home (1/14):

I try to register daily for the HDTV Dream Home. Someone has to win it - why not me ?

Juane Quick-to-See Smith (1/13):
Another presenter at NAEA that should not be missed is Juane Quick-to-See Smith:
WHO ARE WE ? WHERE ARE WE GOING ? WHAT IS OUR FUTURE ?
General Session - 3:00 – 3:50 PM
Born on the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Indian Reservation in Montana, Jaune Quick–to–See Smith is an internationally renowned painter, printmaker, and artist. Her work is in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney, and MOMA, as well as museums across the US and Europe. Join Jaune for this inspirational and insightful session exploring the role we play as Arts Workers and how we can step up to the plate using the process of art to prepare critical thinkers for the future of our country.

...

Deborah Butterfield (1/12):
You don't want to miss Deborah Butterfield at NAEA in San Diego:
"A Life With Horses"
General Session - 3:00 - 3:50 PM
Deborah Butterfield's sculptural forms are based on her unique subject, horses. Constructed in wood and cast in bronze, the freestanding sculptures are shown in two scales: life-size works and smaller bronzes. With extraordinary focus and conviction, Butterfield works independently of the tides of trends and art movements.

New Watercolor  Started (1/10):

I finally got back to painting this morning. I'm doing a subject I've done before - people walking in the early morning in San Francisco. I also dropped off my painting ofCongresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham for Linda Allison. I also cut a mat and got my painting ready to ship off to Arizona for Western Fed.
...

Our Congresswoman (1/07):

I framed my watercolor of our Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham so it could be auctioned off at a Democratic Party Dinner when our State Legislature opens later this month. I'll deliver the painting to my friend Linda Allison so she can take it to Santa Fe.

Charreria (1/06):
Today, docents at the Albuquerque museum got an introduction to our newest exhibition: Arte en la Charrerķa: "The Artisanship of Mexican Equestrian Culture" Dec. 21, 2013 – March 30, 2014
Comprising more than 150 examples of superlative artisan craftsmanship and design distinctive to the charro, Charrerķa features leather work, costumes, textiles, silver, and iron work that illustrate the life of these revered horsemen.
History is an intrinsic part of charrerķa artifacts and culture, as modern day artisans continue to employ the techniques passed down by their ancestors through the centuries. It is slow, patient work, without the rush of mass production, where the artisan takes pleasure in making each object exceptional and handcrafted with the bearer in mind.

Blossom Comes Home (1/03):

I picked up Blossom from her stay at the "Doggie Bed & Breakfast". She got her usual Bath and Beauty Treatment and is happy to be home.

My MasterWorks Entries (1/02):
Here are the three watercolors I decided to enter into MasterWorks of New Mexico this year.

...

Rose Parade (1/01):
Happy New Year: My beautiful bride and I took in the Tournament of Roses Parade in person. Mark that one off our "Bucket List". It was worth seeing "ONCE" but now that we have had the experience - I suggest that it be watched on TV. Way too many people everywhere. We had to wait in line for 2 1/2 hours to view the decoration of the floats - not what I expected at all.

...

Seeing Floats Decorated the Day Before:
After a very, very long wait in line, we finally got to see some floats being decorated inside a large building. People were very patient and polite but I should have watched it on HDTV. Before we got in, they were moving several of the floats out onto the street to finish them in the sunlight.
