April 23 - Space X Liftoff:
NASA's SpaceX Crew-2 astronauts are now in orbit following their early morning launch bound for the International Space Station for the second commercial crew rotation mission aboard the microgravity laboratory. The international crew of astronauts lifted off at 5:49 a.m. EDT Friday from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  Of course it's only proper that the crew rides to the launch site in Teselas.

April 22 - Missing Taos This Year:
I'm going to miss Taos this year - perhaps next year - I have lots of fond memories of the work shop at the Sagebrush Inn. It just not seem right to be wearing masks while visiting with my friends. And ther is no way to know who has be vaccinated. I'll try to reserve my same room at the Sagebrush next year when I call to cancel my reservation for this June.

Someday we may actually meet in person again.

April 13 - Surgery Went Well:
Now, I have another reason to wear a mask when I'm in public. I should say that my bride beat me up - but somebody would think that was true. She has reasons but she would not leave any scars. I had mohs surgery yesterday. Living at 5000 feet above sea leavel has it's dangers. Mohs surgery is considered the most effective technique for treating many basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), the two most common types of skin cancer. Sometimes called Mohs micrographic surgery, the procedure is done in stages, including lab work, while the patient waits. This allows the removal of all cancerous cells for the highest cure rate while sparing healthy tissue and leaving the smallest possible scar.
The surgery was done at the Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center of New Mexico in Uptown. The nurse called me yesterday to see if I was doing OK - then this morning Dr Chang called to see how I was doing. I go back on the 21st to have my sticthes removed.

April 8 - Finished Portrait:
I finished my portrait of "Pavina's Daughter - Penelope" - the mother was a student of mine at Rosedale Middle School. That's a photo of Pavina working on a sculpture in the 8th grade. Her older sister Pitts was my student a few years earlier. Both ladies were very talented and I'm sure Penelope will be as well.

April 5 - First Contact Day:
Every year on April 5th, we celebrate "First Contact", That's because that day was the first warp flight by the human race, which subsequently results in the first contact with an alien race (the Vulcans) on April 5, 2063. It's one of the pivotal moments in human history and after that everything begins to change. Following the invention of warp drive, fleets of starships are built and mankind starts exploring the galaxy. This is the way we celebrate the inventor of warp drive Zefram Cochrane as he makes "First Contact" with the Vulcans.

April 4 - MasterWorks: (from today's Journal)
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Barbara Lohbeck had a vision of bringing the New Mexico master artists together. That was 23 years ago as she began MasterWorks of New Mexico. Last year's event was canceled due to the pandemic, but the artists are back for a virtual event.
“It began with a unique vision, that of combining the talents and experiences of existing fine arts organizations, each representing artists throughout New Mexico, to sponsor a show of New Mexico's finest art,” Lohbeck says of the event's history. The charter board of representatives consisted of the Pastel Society of New Mexico, the New Mexico Watercolor Society, and “Miniature Arts Bardean.” It founded, then included in its second year, a new organization for oils, acrylics and mixed media not framed under glass, the Rio Grande Art Association.
“It's exciting that we're still going and finding a new avenue to have the show go on is amazing,” she says. “It's important to showcase the artists who have kept working on their craft.”This year's event will run the entire month of April at masterworksnm.org. Lohbeck says the spring show is comprised of four separately juried shows.
“Judges and jurors have been extremely qualified these past 21 years and have willingly given time and expertise to an exemplary show of New Mexico's best,” Lohbeck says. Lohbeck says about 180 artists submitted for the show with a total of 424 works. It was whittled down to 141 pieces that represents 93 different artists.
The artists represent the Pastel Society of New Mexico, New Mexico Watercolor Society and Rio Grande Art Association.
Donny Weber was judge for the virtual 2021 show. The three jurors for 2021 were Barbara Coleman, Grant Macdonald, and Alvin Gill-Tapia.
Lohbeck hopes to have next year's event in person.“It's been a learning experience the last two years,” she says. “Last year's show was canceled quickly and we've had to find a way to get the virtual show together.”

April 1 - We Got Our Shots:
Since we have our shots - we are starting to venture out into the world a bit more - but we will most likely wear or masks till next year, We drove up to Santa Fe this morning to one of our favorite places to shop. I even found a great leather jacket with fringe. Of course it won't be cool enough to wear it till fall. My bride found some salt and pepper shakers. We made it back home to watch our Dodgers loose to Colorado.
