Our Mountain From Our Backyard

May 29 -  New Watercolor:
I finally finished my watercolor of "Cactus Blooms". It's now on a quarter sheet of Arches because I decided to crop in down a bit. I blocked out areas with wax paper over a surface coated with gesso. I was able to lift out areas back to white with this new process.

May 24 - Cactus Blooms for Painting:
I went to a theater near me to shoot photos of cactus in bloom - I'll go back in a few days to shoot more as the blooms open up more.

May 17 - Albuquerque Zoo:
It's been a long time since I've visited our Zoo here in Albuquerque. Having our beautiful grand daughter here for a visit gave me a chance to visit our Zoo. It was a wonderful morning to see the animals. Afterwards, we went to the Indian Pueblo Curtural Center for a delightful lunch.

May 15 - Family Visit:
It was great to see family again - We are all vaccinated and the world is a bit safer. We went out to eat a few times. Since Tess is 22 now, she can drink with Grandma. Even little Luna came to visit us.

May 11 - Finished:
This is my attempt to use techniques I learned in Kathleen Conover's workshop last week - I applied a layer of Gesso Juice first, then transferred my drawing, totally wet the surface, next I a placed torn pieces of wrinkled wax paper and painted over the wax paper - after removing the wax paper I had a start at my painting of three roses from my back yard.

Trying out my newly acquired technique on a painting of roses from our backyard

May 8 - Thirty Is Perfection:
We had to wait 1 1/2 hours for seating at Chedders - but it was worth the wait - with restrictive seating and tomorrow being Mothers Day it should be expected - great service and good food - My bride only turns 30 once each year.

May 6 - Developing Experiments into Solutions:
Last night I coated some new sheets of paper with the Gesso Juice and let it dry overnight. This morning, I brushed on a layer of colors. When that dried - everything dries fast in New Mexico - I sprayed water on the painting and put shapes of wrinkled wax paper on it. Then I brushed on darked values of color. I waited and later pulled off the wax paper. This gave me ideas on how to finish these pieces.

May 5 - Workshop Continues:
I attempted to create something from my earlier experiments:

May 4 - First Day of Workshop:
We are working of quarter sheets of watercolor paper. I did about 15 experiments today. I especially like the results using wax paper on wet paper then painting over the shapes of wax paper. Below on photos of my computer monitor and a few of my experiments from today. Tomorrow we start again at 9:00 AM Mountain Time.

May 1 - My Studio:
I rearranged my painting space so I'd be ready to take Kathleen Conover's Virtual watercolor class. She was the juror  for the NMWS Spring (Virtual) Exhibition. On Monday, she is doing a (Virtual) demo for our membership. On Tuesday , the four day (Virtual) workshop begins. I needed to arrange my painting setup so I could see my computer monitor while I paint. Then on Saturday afternoon, she will present the awards for the best paintings in our spring exhibition. She will also explain some of her reasons for selecting the paintings she chose.
