Which Looks Better ? (7/30):
I love the deckle edges on the hand made paper - but, I'm thinking it might be distracting from the image.  Having a sharp clean edge formed by a mat might allow the viewer to focus on the subject.  Which one is better ?

Finished Hollyhock Watercolor (72/9):
This morning I finished the painting I began last week in my Friday paint group.  It's on a sheet of the handmade paper I bought in Taos back in June.  I coated it with gesso before I painted on it.  When framed, I'll let the deckle edges show.
Even thought I failed to ask her permission first, I thank Nancy Walkup for posting the photo, on facebook, that I used as a resource for this painting.  Thank you, Nancy.

Frames For Sale (7/21):
I've been selling off the frames from the WFWS show.  21 of the largest ones just would not sell even at the reasonable prices we posted,  So, the watercolor society decided to sell the remaining frames at $30.00 each. That includes the plexi-glass.  I have 15 left as I post this message.  My bride would like to get these frames finally out of the house.

I posted a recent photo (from a local paper) of our 12 year old grandson Tim playing football back in Kansas. We have not seen the triplets since Christmas.  They sure do grow up fast.  Tim is six foot one now.

Mickey Still Works
Watch Still Works (7/19):
I was in the dumps yesterday because Mickey quit on me.  A new battery didn't do the job of fixing my old watch.  I even went on the web looking for a replacement.  Not just any Mickey Mouse watch would do. Back in 1994 I got this great Fossil Collectors Watch.  I added a silver and turquoise band to finisher it off - PERFECT !!  Today it's fixed and ticking away again.  Life is back in balance again.  The replacement I considered was exactly like the one I bought years ago - Mickey Pull Toy and all.

Steps in a My Watercolor (7/16):
I often shoot pics of my paintings at various stages of development. Below are six steps in the development of my "Acoma Ladder" watercolor. Again, I worked on a sheet of Arches 140 lb rough stretched around a gator board.  I applied acrylic molding paste with a pallet knife prior to painting to enhance the rough texture.  I also blocked areas I wanted to keep the lightest - especially the ladder.  Matted and framed the painting measures 28 x 22 inches.  This painting is about the ladder but more importantly it is about the shadows.

Fall Entries (7/15):
I selected my entries for the NMWS Fall juried exhibition - I realized I would not get my rejections back from other shows in time to roll those watercolors over so, I picked 3 paintings that are not entered elsewhere.  I'm waiting to hear from jurors in California, Kansas, Mississippi and now New Mexico.

You Go Girls (7/11):
Deep in injury time of extra time, the Americans, with just ten players and trailing 2-1 following Marta’s second goal of the match, looked to be down and out. But with virtually the last kick of the ball, Megan Rapinoe hoisted a deep cross into the box that appeared to be heading straight into the gloves of Andrea in the Brazil goal. The keeper miscalculated her dive, however, missing the ball by the slightest of margins and allowing Abby Wambach to thump a header into the back of the net for her second goal of the competition. The unlikely equaliser saved the United States from defeat and eventually propelled them into the semi-finals, with the help of a penalty shootout.

Soccer (7/10):
I watched a fantastic soccer match (football) this morning.  The US women play with a lot of heart and never gave up.  After 122 minutes of hard fought soccer - they tied up the game in the final minutes of extra time.  Then they pulled off a win over Brazil in the shootout.  In August, I get to attend an MLS soccer match in the new stadium in Kansas City.

Livestrong Sporting Park is a soccer-specific stadium in Kansas City, Kansas and is the home of Sporting Kansas City. The stadium opened during the 2011 season of Major League Soccer on June 9, 2011 with a match against the Chicago Fire. The stadium has a seating capacity of 18,467 seats, which can expand to 25,000 for concerts. The stadium is Sporting Kansas City's third home venue. The team played in Arrowhead Stadium from 1996 to 2007 and CommunityAmerica Ballpark from 2008 to 2010.  The earlier name of the team was the Wizards.

Progress On Watercolor (7/8):
Friday morning, I made some progress on my new watercolor "Acoma Ladder".  It's all about the shadows, but that's the last thing I'll add to the painting. I've yet to remove the liquid frisket protecting the white areas.

NMWS Fall 2011 Prospectus (7/7):
The Fall juried exhibition of the New Mexico Watercolor Society (NMWS) is an "open" or national show.  It is open to all watercolor artists in the continental United States (48 states).  I'm extending this invite to artists across the US to enter our Fall Show this year.  Entries (paper and digital) are due by August 12th, 2011.  Ann Smith is our juror/judge this Fall.  Ann is also doing a 4 day workshop prior to our Fall show. Information about the workshop is in the July newsletter.

I also attached a link to the July issue of the NMWS Newsletter BRUSHSTROKES.  You do not need to join the NMWS to enter our Fall show - but, I urge you to join.  Our membership is not limited to New Mexico artists.  Membership would allow you to enter our annual Spring juried show as well as the Western Federation of Watercolor Socities annual juried show. The 2012  WFWS exhibition will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Sad Day (7/6):
It is truely a sad day to see the end of the shuttle program.  I'll watch the launch with regret.  Most of my life, I've followed the drama with hopes for the future.  Will there be a future for us in space or will we continue to waste our blood and resources on destroying our little planet.  As small politicians bicker with each other, our future dies right before our very eyes. Have we no dreams anymore ?

I found out that the counter on my web site now lists the most recent visits by posting the newest dots in yellow rather than red.  They also post a list of the cities where the most recent visits were from.  If you want your own ClustrMap counter on your website or blog click on this link

Pueblo Ladders Finished (7/4):
I put the finishing touches on my newest watercolor this morning.  I hope adding the birds on the roof does not distract.  I thought it needed a little something extra.

New Kimo Sign (7/3):
There is a new icon that lights up on Albuquerque's Central Avenue now.  The Kimo Theater has a new sign in keeping with the art deco style of the building.

US Women's Soccer (7/2):
Click on the photo below to see the goal scored by Megan Rapinoe in the game against Columbia in the race for the world cup.  The United States women’s soccer team beat Colombia in their second game of the 2011 Women’s World Cup by the score of 3-0. One of those goals came courtesy of midfielder Megan Rapinoe who tallied the second goal of the game in the beginning of the second half.  After striking it past the keeper, Rapinoe and her teammates ran to one of the corners of the pitch and she decided to belt out the title of a Bruce Springsteen classic into a field microphone in celebration.

New Mexico On Fire (7/1):
The Governor has ask everyone to stop selling and shooting off fireworks.  Our state is the driest in history.  Major fires are breaking out all over the state.  The Bosque has been closed to all activities.  Since January 1st, Albuquerque has had .19 of an inch of rain.  We may not worry about floods, hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes but we live in very dry country and fire is a constant worry.  It would be smart to totally ban any fireworks.
