Step By Step

...
Progress (2/26):

I made some progress on my newest watercolor this morning at the La Mesa Church.  We also got a chance to photograph the Aztec Dancers who were practicing in the parking lot.  I might get some new paintings from those photos.

Later, at home, I framed three paintings to be exhibited at the Jewish Community Center in March as well as two others that go into MasterWorks in April.  I'll take some invitations for each show to docent training on Monday.

"Favorite Painting" Finished (2/25):
This morning, I finished my new watercolor titled "Favorite Painting".  I even cut a mat so I could take it to critique tomorrow.  Now I need to get a 36 x 22 inch frame for it.

Tomorrow, I'll work on this portrait of a friend from the watercolor workshop at the Sagebrush Inn in Taos, New Mexico.

Finally Selected (2/24):
Finally a juror with taste - I got two watercolors accepted into MasterWorks of New Mexico - the exhibition opens April 1st - only 47 watercolors are in the show and two of them are mine.

Progress & Breakfast (2/20):
Yesterday, after painting, I went out for a late Breakfast at Wecks with my Saturday morning painting friends - So, I broke my diet big time with a Big Breakfast Bacon Burrito and hash browns smothered in cheese and green chili of course - I guess you could say I was celebrating my progress now that I'm now down 15 pounds - I also made more progress on my new watercolor of two young girls pointing at their "Favorite Painting".

More Painting (2/19):
On Friday, I made some progress on my new watercolor titled "Favorite Painting". This morning, I'll work on it some more in our Saturday group. The artist who created the watercolor the two girls are pointing at should be there. I hope she approves of me using her painting. Below, you can see that I'm working on a full sheet - but, when I mat the painting I will crop the image to a much narrower format. I want to use the narrow vertical format to emphasize the young ladies streaching up to point out the painting.
Oh, yes - I got another rejection - this time from Missouri. It does not seem to be my year. I'm still wainting to hear the jurors decisions from MasterWorks of New Mexico and Art at the Center (Overland Park, Kansas). Perhaps my luck will improve. In the mean time, I'll just keep painting what I love.

Another Rejection (2/16):
The watercolor I entered in the NWWS juried show in Seattle was rejected.  So, I guess I'll hang it in the show next month at the Jewish Community Center.  The groups that paint on Saturdays and Mondays are having a joint exhibit there next month.

Docent "Friendship Luncheon" (2/15)
On Valentine's Day, the docents at the Albuquerque Museum held it's annual "Friendship Luncheon" to thank everyone for making the museum run smoothly. We thanked the museum by inviting them to the luncheon.  Frani made a plate of her Chocolate Cheesecake Squares for the luncheon.  We also ask fellow docents to show off some of their individual creative efforts.  I took two paintings for my part of the display.

New Watercolors Began:
This morning, I started drawings for two new watercolors.  I started  - one shows two young ladies pointing out what they like about a painting in a recent NMWS exhibition - it's on a full sheet but, the format needs to be long and narrow to make the composition work.  If it works out I'll have to order a special frame.  My other painting will be of a friend from the Watercolor Workshop in Taos - the abstract reflections in the window are what attracted me to this composition - framed it will be my normal painting size of 28 x 22 inches.

Finished My Painting (2/14):
Yesterday I finished my new watercolor of "Tiffanie at Chaco".  While I was working on it - I took photos of my painting at several stages.  Below, is a series showing the painting from the first drawing on Friday morning to the finished painting Sunday afternoon.

A Sunday Balloon

Sunday Morning (2/13):
This is another wonderful Sunday morning, I read the paper, watched the news, made coffee, worked on my newest watercolor, took photos of more hot air balloons and then I made breakfast for my bride.  She likes to sleep late.  I fixed scrambled eggs with bits of ham, onions, cheese and of course green chiles.

Of course - I also posted on my Facebook page and updated my blog.
My Newest Watercolor (2/12):
This morning, I painted at the La Mesa church with my Saturday friends. I made a bit more progress on "Tiffanie at Chaco".  Several of the Monday painters group joined us to discuss a joint exhibit we are going to have next month at the Jewish Community Center.

This morning, as I left home to go paint - hot air balloons floated over the neighborhood.  I had to take a few pics before I drove off.  Above are some I posted on facebook later in the day.  Two were landing in the park behind our house as I drove away. You could even see the large shapes through our living room windows.

Progress (2/11):
I made a bit of progress this morning on my newest watercolor of "Tiffanie at Chaco" - I was painting this morning with my Friday Friends at the Unitarian Church - Tomorrow I'll do more while painting with my Saturday Friends at La Mesa.  The Saturday and Monday groups that paint at the La Mesa Church are meeting together tomorrow to plan for a joint exhibit at the Jewish Community Center.

Serious Painting (2/10):
I started a drawing this morning for a new watercolor. If I want to have good paintings to enter into shows I'd better start painting more. I've been busy organizing Western Fed stuff - but, I still have time to paint. This mornings drawing is on a full sheet of Arches Rough. It shows one of my grand daughters, Tiffanie, squeezing into a narrow doorway at Chaco Canyon last summer. Her hat and the awkward pose makes for an interesting composition. This subject provides for strong contrasts of light and shadow, which I love as well as competing textures. Yesterday, I also stretched four sheets of 140 lb Arches around sheets of Gator Board to be ready for some more serious painting.
My Bride Keeps Busy (2/8):
I snuck a photo of the newest quilt top that Frani just finished. She keeps busy doing new designs all the time. Tonight while I'm gone to a lecture, she will be starting the binding on the bear quilt she made for our bedroom.

Entries Rejected (2/7):
All three of my entries to the Georgia Watercolor Society were rejected. The notice came in the mail today. You win some and you loose some - I'll just keep painting what I want and move on.
I'm still waiting to hear from juror's for watercolor exhibits in Seattle, Kansas City, Louisanna, Missouri and here in New Mexico. My luck may change.

....
Cold In New Mexico (2/4):
Albuquerque schools are closed for the fourth day today to save gas and because of burst water pipes. The mayor closed many public buildings including the museum so our watercolor society meeting has been canceled for February. We are trying to get the word out. I'm planning to go over to the Unitarian Church this morning to paint with friends, if it's open. Tempertures in the city should get above freezing today and begin to help out, - but, it still gets damn cold at night.

Snow On Our Mountain (2/3):
The clouds cleared away - now we can see how much snow is on the Sandia. They claim that there is a new foot and a half of snow up there. From here it looks more like powered sugar sprinkled around. We see the west side of our mountain and the slope is quite steep on our side. I posted some of the photos I took from our back yard this morning on my facebook page. I shoot using a 300mm lens on my camera.

Mailing Off Entries (2/02):
I'm mailing off my entries today, to juried watercolor shows in Louisianna and Kansas. I entered the Louisianna Watercolor Society's Annual International last year but got rejected. This will be my second try. Two of the paintings I entered were subjects from New Orleans on our last visit there.

The show back in Kansas is one I've been in before when we lived there. Now it's called Art At The Center. It's in the City of Overland Park, Kansas. The show opens on April 1st, about the same time we planned a trip back there anyway.

...

Newest Painting (2/01):
Last Saturday, I started on a new watercolor - again inspired by the Harold Joe Waldrum polaroids on display at the Albuquerque museum.  Frani and I went to the members opening on Friday night.  I'm working on hot press paper which I don't like.  It's was all I had stretched.  I'll have to soak some Arches rough and stretch it - that works so much better for me.

Choices For KC Exhibition:
I need to select four paintings to submit to a juried exhibit in Overland Park. I've gotten into the show before when I lived in KC. I can't enter anything that I've submitted to other national shows till I hear back from them. The show opens in early April, just about the time we had planned to visit back in KC. I posted 14 watercolors on my facebook page that I'm considering. http://www.facebook.com/woody.duncan1?ref=name  I need to decide in the next few days and put my entry in the mail.  Several of the paintings have been selected into other shows but there are no restrictions against entering those. They also don't restrict an artist from entering work done within a certain time frame - so some of these were done 3 - 4 years back.

...
WFWS:
Recently, I sent off the final results for artists who were accepted into this years WFWS exhibit. The Western Federation of Watercolor Societies is made up of eleven watercolor societies through out the west. I sent the results to the delegates in each society and they contact their artists who entered. 494 artists entered 1066 paintings for consideration in this years WFWS exhibit. Only 125 paintings were selected by our juror Dale Laitinen. This will be the 36th annual exhibit. It opens with a gala awards banquet on May 6th in Albuquerque. Each year a different cociety hosts the exhibition in rotation.

           Our juror,
Dale Laitinen is doing a 4 day watercolor workshop just before the WFWS exhibition opens. From May 2nd through the 5th he will be teaching his workshop at the Hispanic Arts building (Expo New Mexico) here in Albuquerque. Any member of one of the societies can take the workshop for $250.00. Also during the run of the exhibit, May 6th till June 5th, several artists will be giving free demos. I personally plan to teach a 2 hour watercolor workshop for 5th graders as well. It's going the be a very busy schedule for the month.
