MasterWorks (3/27):
I was fortunate to have two of my watercolors selected for this years MasterWorks of New Mexico exhibition.  MasterWorks of New Mexico now in its 13th year, is one of the few statewide juried ones, making it one of the toughest exhibitions to join. Exclusively for New Mexico artists, the show combines the talents of existing fine-arts organizations, each representing artists from throughout New Mexico. Join me at the opening preview Friday, April 1st, from 5 to 8 pm. Read more in this article from the Sunday Journal.

Time On My Hands Now:
More time on my hands now - since KU lost today - that means 2 games I don't need to watch - Thanks to a great team that made the season fun to follow - to be sure I'll be at the Fox & Hound with the alums next year.
The Art Spot (3/26):
Here's another good reason to live in New Mexico - The Art Spot. Started by Artisan's of Santa Fe - they have a host of hands on workshops you can take April through September.  A seperate building for the workshops is just around the corner from Artisan's store in Santa Fe.

Finished Painting:
Finished at last - or at least I'm stopping to move on to another painting. At critique, this morning, others loved it - but, I'm my own worst critic - it's way over painted, too dark and not a strong enough path of light through the composition.
Painting Poppies (3/25):
I got back to painting this morning - made some progress on my watercolor of poppies. Perhaps, I'll finish it tomorrow. Tonight - I'm watching the Jayhawks get closer to another national championship.

Fighting A Cold (3/24):
Seattle is a great city if it wasn't so cold and damp. I'm still fighting the sniffles and a sore throat from our trip.  Today I severely cut back my eleven rose bushes.  I should have done it a week ago. When we got home, to Albuquerque, they were leafing out all over.  I've got to be better by tomorrow - I want to go painting in the morning and the Jayhawks play basketball late in the afternoon.

Back From Seattle (3/23):
We got back from the NAEA Conference last night.  Both of us have sore throats from the damp cold air in Seattle.  It's a great city, but next time we go when the weather is warmer.  The conference was great and my workshop went well.  Seattle has the best transportation system ever.  Light rail from the airport to downtown. Then free buses all over downtown. We rode the monorail to the Space Needle.  For $2.50 we took a bus to the suburbs and back - got a transfer that was good over and over all day.  But mostly we just walked and walked all over.  Saturday the sun was out and I'm sure we walked 12 miles or more.

Packing For Seattle (3/15):
Blossom has a reservation at her regular Doggie Bed n Breakfast.  She will get her beauty treatment before we pick her up next week.  It looks like rain every day in Seattle so, we are packing our Mickey Mouse parka's we bought in Disneyland.
Frani and I are both looking forward to the Binney and Smith party on Thursday night.  They always do things up right.  This year they rented the entire Experience Music Project (EMP Museum) in the Seattle Center.  This may be the most unusual and visually-stimulating museum you’ll ever experience.  Designed by Frank O. Gehry, this building defies description.  Highlights include hands-on experiences where you can look, touch, experiment and perform.   Free your inner rock star – play music and produce your own CD at The Sound Lab.  For more information on the EMP, go to

EMP Seattle

To my disappointment, I found out that KU's first game in the NCAA basketball tournament is at the same time as the workshop I'm giving.  This is going to be the Jayhawks time to go all the way and show they are the true national champs - unless they blow it like last year.

Painting Poppies (3/12):
After three tight paintings in a row with figures, I needed to paint something looser.  My bride is tired of my close up poppies (a la O'Keeffe) - So, I'm painting a view of several poppies. We grow them in our back yard here in Albuquerque.  Nice thing about poppies is that you can bend and twist them as suits the needs of the composition.  It's so much more flexible than painting people.

Another Entry (3/11):
I must be a glutton for rejection.  I just mailed off my entry into Watercolor USA in Springfield, Missouri.  It's a really tough show to get into - but why not try.  I entered my two newest watercolors.  I've gotten six rejection (not accepted) notices this year.  So far, MasterWorks of New Mexico is the only juried show I've gotten into.

Another Rejection (3/10):
I got another rejection from a juried watercolor exhibition.  This time from the Louisiana Watercolor Society.  Maybe, It's just not my year.  I'm still considering entering Watercolor USA in Springfield, Missouri.  They need my entry by March 29th.  Perhaps I'll try - it's a great venue as well as a tough show to get into.  I printed out the prospectus to remind me.  The link is below in case someone else wants to try.

Packing For NAEA (3/9):
I'm packing up my materials for my workshop in Seattle.  We are flying to attend the NAEA Convention this time - So, I need to ship the material for my workshop.  I sent the box via FedEx today (64 lbs).  They said it would take three days but I didn't want to take any chances - I want it by next Thursday when we get there.

3-D Math in Art: Building an Icosahedron

Without a pattern — using only a compass, pencil, straight edge, scissors, and glue—create an icosahedron. Instructions for creating the other four platonic solids will also be discussed. This is a way to introduce 3-D math concepts without measurements or calculations.

Drawing In The Museum (3/8):
A week ago we were told that it was OK for students to draw in the museum. So, I quickly drew up a lesson to use in the Waldrum Polaroid exhibition.  We used my lesson plan today and it went quite well.

Watercolor Opening Today (3/6):
A bunch of local artists are showing off our watercolors at the Jewish Community Center this month.  We had a good turnout for our opening this afternoon.  The JCC is on Wyoming - South of Academy.  The show is up all month - check it out.

Watercolor Progress (3/5):
I've finished most of the work checking in the paintings for the big WFWS show in May.  Now it's time to get back to some serious painting of my own.  I made some more progress on my newest portrait on Friday morning.  I really like the abstract qualities of this composition.

...
Gouache Demo:
Deborah Secor demonstrated ACEO's in gouache at this mornings Watercolor Society meeting at the museum.   What she paints are not “miniatures” technically, but each piece is only 2.5" x 3.5" in size, no more, no less.  This was our last Saturday meeting, at least for this year.  We may consider switching to Saturday meetings next year - it's under discussion.

Student Art Show (3/4):
One stop, on March's First Friday art tour, Frani and I made was at the opening of the Metro Student Art Show at the Fair Grounds.  On display, was art created by Albuquerque Middle and High School art students.  I will need to go back another time when I can really see something. The crowd in attendance was fantastic.  This is a sure sign of the importance of art programs in our schools.

Hanging Watercolors Today (3/3):
I'm helping hang watercolors at the Jewish Community Center today. Artist friends of mine who paint together at the La Mesa church (Mondays & Saturdays) have a joint exhibit at JCC this month. It's a wonderful venue. The opening is this Sunday from 2 to 4 - we are in hopes of a good crowd for the opening.

Above are the three watercolors I'm hanging today

WFWS (3/2):
The last two boxes of watercolors arrived today, from San Diego and Oregon, for paintings juried into the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies 36th Annual Exhibition. http://www.wfws.org/ It's my job to check each painting, as they arrive, to see it the frame sizes are correct.  I correct the list of frame sizes as they come in. That's so our framer will build the correct size frames. It's going to be a fantastic exhibition.  We only get to host this exhibit in New Mexico every ten years or so.
I must be eating too good of late because I've gained a couple of pounds.  We walk 3 miles every day - but, perhaps we need to walk more. I had hoped to be down 20 pounds by the middle of March.  I doubt I'll make my goal. Of course, it did not help that we stopped to try the Lin's Chinese Buffet in on the way home from shopping.

Exhibit Opens Soon (3/1):

I framed three of my paintings to be exhibited at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in March as well as two others that go into MasterWorks in April.  I took some invitations for each show to docent training Yesterday.  We hang the show on Thursday.  The Opening is on Sunday, March 6th.

WFWS:
Recently, I have been checking paintings as they arrive from the other ten societies for this years Western Federation of Watercolor Societies Annual Exhibition (WFWS).  This will be the 36th annual WFWS exhibit.  It opens with a gala awards banquet on May 6th here in Albuquerque. Each year a different society hosts this exhibition in rotation.

           Our juror,
Dale Laitinen is doing a 4 day watercolor workshop just before the WFWS exhibition opens. From May 2nd through the 5th he will be teaching his workshop at the Hispanic Arts building (Expo New Mexico) here in Albuquerque. Any member of one of the societies can take the workshop for $250.00. Also during the run of the exhibit, May 6th till June 5th, several artists will be giving free demos. I personally plan to teach a 2 hour watercolor workshop for 5th graders as well. It's going the be a very busy schedule for the month.
