Fifty Years Today (8/31):

Fifty years ago I married a beautiful young lady. I still call her my bride. She is the love of my life - I am so lucky to have Frani in my life. Today we begin the next fifty years together.

New Portrait (8/23):
Today, I started on a new watercolor portrait - the subject is our congress woman Michelle Lujan Grisham - Michelle represents New Mexico's 1st district mostly Albuquerque. I'm working from photos I took at a political party at the home of Fred Harris in Corrales.

Beautiful Sunrise This Morning (8/22):
We went to another Isotopes baseball game last night. 150 Kansas University Alumni showed up for the game. Thank's to Ron for putting the event together. The Topes actually won the game - they usually loose when we are there. We go again on Sunday night - if weather permits, they will have fireworks. This time I got seats way up high - my bride wanted to try those seats out.

Full Moon (8/21):

This morning, I took a photo of the full moon over Albuquerque. It was cloudy last night so I was not able to catch the moon rise over our mountain.

Improved Brushstrokes (8/20):

Thank's to our new editor (Laurel Weathersbee) the NMWS Newsletter has an up to date look. I'm posting a link here on my website for everyone to check it out.

Roadrunner to Mississippi (8/19):

I received notice, this morning, that my watercolor of our neighborhood roadrunner titled "Breakfast" was selected by Lain Stewart - Juror for the 28th Grand National Exhibition in Jackson, Mississippi. The Mississippi Watercolor Society Exhibition will be on display from October 5th, 2013 till January 5th, 2014. This is the fifth straight year that I've been in the Mississippi Grand National.

Indian Market (8/17):
When we at Indian Market in Santa Fe today - Sharon Dry Flower Reyna told us about this new book - Sharon is proudly featured in the publication. Indian Market was so crowded on Saturday morning - that we lasted only 3 hours seeing only about 50% of the show.

Jason - Finished

Finished Portrait (8/16):
I finished my portrait of Jason this morning. Below are several stages of the painting as it progressed. I painted on a 250 lb sheet of handmade paper I got from Jerry's Art Arama. I coated the paper with gesso before I painting.

Busy, Busy, Busy (8/14):
I've been too busy to post on my blog. Busy taking entries for the NMWS Fall "Open" Exhibition. As file manager, my job is to accept and organize the entries from artist. The entry deadline is Friday the 16th. Monday morning I'll send the entries off to Ted Nuttall our juror.
On another exhibition, I entered 4 watercolors into the New Mexico State Fair Art Exhibition. All four were accepted. Perhaps, the state fair accepts all entries. Whatever, this means I don't have to pick up rejected paintings on Saturday morning and we can head up to Santa Fe early that morning for Indian Market.
This Friday morning, I plan to finish my newest watercolor of Jason. Then I will be taking in the last few entries for the NMWS Fall Exhibit.

Breakfast for Dinner (8/11):

For dinner last night, I fixed breakfast. I made a bacon & cheese omelet plus hashbrown with green chilis of course. I don't need to cook today because we are taking in an Isotopes baseball game this afternoon.

McEuan Portrait Finished (8/10):
Yesterday morning, I finished my new watercolor of John McEuan. I'm quite satisfied with the result. I used the new handmade paper that I ordered from Jerry's Artarama. I put a coat of gesso on it before I did my initial drawing.

Elaine De Kooning

JFK and Art (8/8):
Every artist and teacher should know this story: I often share the story when I take students through the Albuquerque museum. We have a large canvas by Elaine De Kooning.
De Kooning characteristically immersed herself in the project, turning out hundreds of drawings and 23 finished canvases in her attempt to capture the President's restless energy. Because Kennedy had no time for formal sittings, de Kooning climbed a stepladder toting her charcoal, pencils and pad for a better view of Kennedy, who fidgeted constantly as he conferred with aides. Caroline Kennedy, a toddler, painted beside de Kooning while sitting on the floor. After Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963, she stopped painting for almost a year.

...
At NAEA, earlier this year, Frani and I stayed at the same hotel that the Kennedy's were in. Five days prior to the presidential couple’s fateful trip to Dallas in November 1963, descriptions of the presidential suite at Fort Worth's Hotel Texas were released to the public. Unhappy with the couple’s accommodations, a Fort Worth art critic proposed installing art in the presidential "suite." Drawing on local private and public art collections, each room of the suite was outfitted with works of art that befitted the tastes and interests of the president and first lady. It included works by Thomas Eakins, Marsden Hartley, Franz Kline, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, among others. But, they arrived so late that evening they didn't notice the significant artwork until the morning. The Kennedys were awestruck when they realized this extraordinary exhibition and called the organizers to thank them.

The president was assassinated later that day.

New Cook at Our House (8/7):
For the entire month of August - I'm doing the cooking at our house.  Last night, I fixed Carlic, Lemon Chicken. Thanks to my buddy Phil for posted the recipe of Facebook.

NAEA 2008

Going to San Diego (8/5):
I just received notice from NAEA that my "Hands on Workshop", Collograph Printmaking Without a Press, was accepted for inclusion in the program for the 2014 NAEA National Convention in San Diego, CA, March 29-31 - the other three proposals I made were not accepted. It looks like I'm going to San Diego next March. I'm doing a test run of a similar workshop for NMAEA in Santa Fe this November. This time I'm building the lesson around Petroglyph Rock art from the SouthWest.
