Progress / Cadillac Shadows (3/30):
At our Saturday Painter's Group, this morning, I made some progress on my new watercolor "Cadillac Shadows". I even surprised myself that I had the courage to do an orange sky and a yellow ground.

Cadillac Shadows (3/28):
I'm starting on another watercolor about Cadillac Ranch - this one is more about the cast shadows - my challenge will be make the car on the right strongest and the to fade the cars as they recede tho the left. This is a smaller painting - will fit in one of my standard 28 x 22 inch frames. I'm painting on a sheet of 140 lb Arches rough stretched around a sheet of gator board.

Kansas Basketball (3/27):
Friday night, Kansas faces Michigan in the Jayhawks attempt to continue on their journey as part of the NCAA Tournament. Beating Roy William's team got us to this point. Let's go all the way. I'll be at Fox & Hound with other KU Alum rooting on our team.

Comanche Moon (3/26):

“So many raids were made by moonlight that in Texas a full, bright spring or summer moon is still known as a Comanche Moon.” From: Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History by S. C. Gwynne.

I took this photo (on Tuesday, March 26th, 2013) of the full moon, about 2 hours after sunset, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

MasterWorks (3/23):
I helped take in watercolors at MasterWorks of New Mexico this morning. It's always a great display of New Mexico's artistic talent. This annual juried show has acrylic, oil, pastels and even miniatures. Helping out today gave me a preview of the quality of the art in this years juried show. The opening reception is Friday, April 5th from 5pm till 8pm in the Hispanic Arts Building at Expo New Mexico.

My Beautiful Bride (3/20):
On the right is a photo from the past. The photo shows what my sweet bride looked like about ten years before I met and fell in love with her.

"Cadillac Ranch" Finished (3/18):
On Sunday, I finished my painting of Cadillac Ranch. It's a subject I've been planning to tackle for several years. It was a lot of fun - perhaps I'll try another one sometime. Below shows how the image developed step by step.

Cadillac Ranch - Step by Step

Painting Cadillac Ranch (3/17):
I'm making good progress on my "Cadillac Ranch" watercolor. Of course, I took time out to watch my Jayhawks win their three games in the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City. Now on to the NCAA tournament. Rock Chalk Jayhawk KUUUUUUUUUU. I'll just have to finish this painting before KU plays again - next Friday.

New Watercolor

Cadillac Ranch - My Next Watercolor (3/14):
             I-40, Amarillo, TX Directions:
Just west of the Amarillo city line. I-40 exit 60. Drive south to the frontage road (old Route 66), then turn left. Drive east one mile. Cadillac Ranch will be on the right (south) side; just park your car along the shoulder and enter the pasture through an unlocked gate. I'm going to have fun working on this, full sheet, watercolor over the next couple days.

Not My Photo:
The moon illusion is working overtime here, thanks to some clever camera placement by astrophotographer Mark Gee, who set up shop a full two kilometers away from Mount Victoria Lookout in anticipation of the Moon's appearance over the horizon. Writes Gee of the video, which he calls, appropriately, "Full Moon Silhouettes"

Driving Through Texas (3/11):
It was quite appropriate that we listened to "Empire of the Summer Moon" as we drove across Texas - especially as we drove through Quanah, Texas. We love listening to books as we drive. S. C. Gwynne’s "Empire of the Summer Moon" spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.
Quanah was the son of Cynthia Ann Parker, who in 1836 (at age 9) was taken captive by Comanches in North Texas. She subsequently married the prominent chief Peta Nocona and bore him three children. Quanah ("fragrance"), the eldest, was born in the Wichita Mountains of southern Oklahoma in about 1850. Cadillac Ranch:
I made one necessary stop, at this photo op, on the way back from NAEA in Fort Worth. It was cold and windy but, I had to shoot photos of the changing art form called "Cadillac Ranch". Weather and time plus more and more layers of spray paint continue to change this unique form of public art.

NAEA Fort Worth (3/7-10):

My bride and I enjoyed our trip to Fort Worth for this years NAEA Conference. A big thank you to the great folks from Davis Publications for taking the New Mexico teachers out to dinner on Friday night. The Davis people are the best. After dinner Frani and I went to Billy Bob's for some good old country music. The entire weekend was fantastic.

<<<   You could see this beautiful angel, on the building, just outside the restaurant window - right behind Frani and I - Again, Thank You Davis for a great evening.

Our Roadrunner (3/5):
Yesterday, Our neighborhood roadrunner hung around for photos. She travels through our yard each day looking for little lizzards.

Wonderful Mornings (3/4):
I love the mornings - it's a very special time. This morning, I was greated by a fantastic sunrise. My bride eve got up to see it. She was impressed but went right back to bed saying that mornings were my time. I'm headed to the museum this morning for more training on Deco Japan. Tomorrow our Docent Team has a tour scheduled.

Progress So Far

Just a Rose (3/1):
I was unhappy with the rose I started on a gessoed board - So, I'm doing it over on "paper" no gesso this time.

Jayhawk Myth in Bronze & Snow:
In Lawrence, Kansas, in front of Strong Hall on the University of Kansas campus, there sits a 600-pound bronze sculpture that has been displayed on campus since 1958 and has been in its current location since 1975. This bronze, created by sculptor Elden Tefft, is ostensibly of that mythical flying creature (and KU mascot), the Jayhawk.
The Myth: If ever a virgin shall graduate from the University of Kansas, the Great Bronze Jayhawk shall acquire the power of flight, and within a week shall leave its perch to wreak havoc on all states other than Kansas (where havoc is not to be tolerated).
