February 28 - When Will I Learn ?
Every trip to New Orleans, my bride seems to find something new to bring home. When will I ever learn ?  I do have to admit that the light fixture hads a perfect touch to our home. That's not me on the very tall ladder - we hired Billy to hang our new light.

February 23 - Progress Painting:
This morning, I made a bit of progress on my newest watercolor. It's of a singer on the street in Cadiz, Spain. It's only the second painting I've attemped from out last cruise. I have lots more resources from that cruise to paint from.

February 21 - City Arts Board:
I was officially appointed to the City Arts Board tonight.  The Arts Board consists of nine members that represent each of the nine City Council Districts and two at-large members. As mandated by the Art in Municipal Places Ordinance, members include persons widely known for their professional competence and experience in the visual arts, and knowledgeable lay persons. Each member serves a staggered three year term.
The central objective of the Board is "to promote and encourage private and public programs to further the development and public awareness of, and interest in, the visual arts and fine crafts and cultural properties.

Visit the Public Art Urban Enhancement Division offices at 2 Civic Plaza NW in the Downtown Arts & Cultural District, just inside the Albuquerque Convention Center West Lobby foyer.  The office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

February 20 - Frames:
I spent the afternoon framing some of my watercolors. The Sax player was accepted into MasterWorks, The one showing the "Brooklyn Bridge" will be in the NMWS-SC Spring Show, I'll display the other two at the Albuquerque Museum on Monday on what the docents call Creativity Day. When I say framing - what I mean is that I'm switching paintings out of other frames because I only have so many frames.

February 17 - Saturday Painter's Group:
This morning, I got a start on "Street Music - Cadiz, Spain" First liquid mask - then Wet in Wet with some salt.

...

February 16 - More Entries:
Here are the four paintings that I just entered into the Art at the Center's International Exhibition in Overland Park, Kansas. I just got to try - even though it's ofter a crap shoot. A friend of mine, Julie Bilyea, is in charge of the gallery in Overland Park - but what gets into the show is totally up to the juror.

...

February 15 - Mini Mountains:
My next series of watercolors - I'm going to try miniature "Torn Mountains" to enter into MasterWorks New Mexico Miniature Watercolor Division.

...

MasterWorks of New Mexico:

My watercolor "Street Sax" was selected to be in MasterWorks New Mexico I took it out of it's frame for another painting - looks like I need to frame it again. This is the very first painting that I've had selected into a juried show this year.

February 12 - Cake:

My wonderful bride is making a cake for my friends today.

Portraits:
I believe this photo of President Obama in front of his wife's portrait tells quite a story - I'm quite sure that neither the President nor Michelle would say they are not happy with these portraits - LBJ rejected his first portraits but he was not as kind - Personally, I'm not too happy with these portraits - but, that's my personal opinion. Baltimore-based artist Amy Sherald was the artist for Michelle's portrait. Kehinde Wiley painted President Obama's portrait - I don't believe the portrait does the president justice and I find the background very distracting - But, what do I know about art.

February 11 - Balloons:
This morning, we had hot air balloons over our house. Each Valentine's Day the balloons show up - love must be in the air, even though it must be even colder up there. But then, cool air helps the balloons rise. Below are photos as one balloon floated over our house.

February 10 -  "UnCovering the Past":
This morning, I finished my newest watercolor - construction workers in the New Orleans French Quarter - "UnCovering the Past" shows the facade of beautiful bricks being revealed. Sadly, they covered the bricks with a new layer of plaster the next day. This is how I plan to mat the watercolor.

February 9 -  Making Progress:
Progress this morning on my newest watercolor "UnCovering the Past". I have a good feeling about this painting - I see potential.

February 8 -  More Entries:
I just entered two watercolors into the NMWS-SC Members Only Exhibition in Las Cruces. I'm waiting for rejects from some other juried shows before I can decide what to enter (rollover) into juried exhibits in Kansas and Missouri. I'm also busy writing articles for NAEA in Seattle. My bride is busy making new curtains for the kitchen. She calls on me to help measure material from time to time. That way if there's a mistake she can blame me.

Food As Art:
Food is just another form of art - and breakfast is so important - yesterday's and today's creation with eggs are below.

February 7 - Elon Musk - You Dit It:
Yes - I am  fascinated with most things related with space - But, especially with the success by Elon Musk:

Following the launch of the Falcon Heavy, the electric car and its dummy passenger were placed into orbit around the Earth. But in a few hours, the payload will be on its way into a solar orbit that will send it cruising by Mars.

According to Elon Musk, SpaceX's founder and CEO, the car was blasting David Bowie's "Life on Mars" as it travels through the solar system. Musk also named the dummy "Starman" after another song by the late musician.

Clad in SpaceX's new spacesuit, the dummy astronaut is casually drifting in space with his right hand on the steering wheel and left arm resting on the door. Along with great views of "Starman" and his roadster, you can see some spectacular views of Earth in the webcast.

...

February 6 - Incredible:
The launch was successful and all three first stage boosters separated to propel the second stage with the Tesla Roadster into space. The Roadster is now on its way to Mars, or at least as close as it can possibly get on a 6-month and over 200 million-mile voyage, on an orbit around the sun.  I got to watch the entire launch, booster seperation and the dual landings on my i-Phone.

February 4 - "Street Music-Malaga":
I  just finished - another watercolor - this time the musicians are not in New Orleans - They are in Malaga, Spain, one of the early ports on our cruise. I decided to crop it down a bit. "Street Music-Malaga"

February 3 - My Demo:
This morning, I did my demo for my fellow watercolor artists at the Albuquerque museum. Each month the NMWS has a demo by a different artist at our meetings. As a former middle school art teacher, I have used the technique  demonstrate here to help the students learn about foreground, middle ground, and background by taking advantage of collage techniques combined with wet-in-wet watercolor application.I use this method at any age to introduce the magic of watercolor. In addition to expanding peoples appreciation for the art of collage, the process reinforces basic color mixing theory using only primary colors.

February 2 - Progress:
This morning I made some progress on my new watercolor - this time it's construction workers in New Orleans - "UnCovering the Past" shows a facade of beautiful bricks being revealed. Sadly, they covered the bricks with a new layer of plaster the next day.  I'm using just a bit of liquid mask to protect a few highlights. I'm also applying some Light Molding Paste to add texture on the bricks.

February 1 - Moon Over Our Mountain:
On the evening of the 30th, I shot pics of the "Blue Moon" raising over the Sandia. We did enjoy watching the full moon from our hot tub. It was almost like daylight out there basking in the moon light. The morning of the 31st - there was a total lunar eclispe - but, I slept in. I love my little Nikon - but can't figure out how to shoot time exposures so I saw no reason to get up and take photos.

"Uncovering the Past":
This is my drawing for a new watercolor - this time it's construction workers in New Orleans - "UnCovering the Past" shows a facade of beautiful bricks being revealed. Sadly, they covered the bricks with a new layer of plaster the next day.

I'm Honored:
Sara Gordon was so kind to change her cover photo  on  Facebook to include the watercolor I did of her beautiful daughter. Sara Vongboutdy was a student in my art classes back at Rosedale Middle school in Kansas City, Kansas. Sara is the mother of 3 beautiful children & a proud Navy wife. Tyler and Sara live in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
