Happy Birthday Tim, Tess and Tiff (9/28):
Hard to believe they are 12 years old now. Time sure is moving fast - they will be in college before we know it. The photo below shows Tim being mobbed by several girls at their birthday party a couple days ago.

Last Two Roses:
Today I started on my last two rose paintings - This Saturday starts the Annual Hot Air Balloon Fiesta and I'll be shooting hundreds of photos to paint from - I'll get up at 4:30 am to catch the shuttle bus to the launch site so I can be in the mist of the balloons when they go up.

Playing with photos of my roses in Photoshop is giving me ideas
about how to approach my paintings - this red and white rose is a good example.

New Mexico Art Teachers (9/27):
November 5th & 6th is the NMAEA Fall Conference in Ruidoso "Art in the 21st Century". This is the largest professional development opportunity for art teachers in the state of New Mexico! We are so looking forward to being with other art teachers, hearing Nancy Walkup, editor of School Arts Magazine and Katherine Douglas author of TAB: Teaching for Artistic Behavior.  There will be two full days of valuable workshops and presentations by art teachers from around New Mexico. Don't miss this - Register on line at: http://www.newmexicoarteducators.org/

Disco Fever in Colorado (9/26):
I created a sample for my icosahedron/disco ball workshop for art teachers in Colorado next month. The theme for the CAEA conference is Peace & Love - that 60's Thing. The icosahedron (greek “eikosáedron” = twenty-sided) is bounded by 20 equilateral triangles. The faces are bordered by 30 edges of equal length and 12 vertices. 5 triangles meet at each of the vertices. It has the highest ratio of volume to surface area and, according to Plato, symbolizes water.

Six Watercolors of Roses (9/25):
I finished two more small watercolors of roses this morning painting with my friends at the La Mesa church.  This week, I plan to paint at least two more. Do I have the courage to try painting a white one?

More Small Roses (9/24):
I was painting with friends this morning - making some progress on more of my small rose watercolors. Next weekend Balloon Fiesta starts - So, I may be out photographing hot air balloons rather than painting next weekend.  Then, I'll have resources for new watercolors.

New Materials for Colorado Workshops
I've got some neat new materials for my art teacher workshops in Colorado next month.  We are going to use the fluorescent inks will stand out on black paper in my Collograph Printmaking workshop. The subject matter will be Disco Dancers 60's style. The reflective paper will be used to create a mirror ball effect in my Icosahedron workshop. The theme of the CAEA Conference is Peace and Love - 60's Style.

Tiffanie Grows Up (9/23):
It seems that my ability to handle watercolor has improved over the years as my models have gotten more mature as well. From left to right - Tiffanie's ages: 5, 7, 9, and 11.

New Mexico Sunrise (9/22):
I often grab my camera to document the sunrise over our mountain. The sun rises over the Sandia mountains just east of Albuquerque. Our house is at about 5000 feet altitude - the mountains rise to around 10,600 feet. We often have beautiful skies here in Albuquerque. Both photos below were taken from our backyard.

Almost Finished (9/21):
A few touches here and there and my new watercolor of Tiffanie at White Sands may be finished - the shadow is the major reason for the image.
New Rose (9/19):
Started a new rose this morning - blocked out the lightest areas with liquid frisket and did some wet-n-wet underpainting to set the mood. The black and white photo is my quick and easy way to do a value study.

Back To Painting (9/18):
I finished the newsletter for the NM Watercolor Society and sent it off to a few people to proof read for me. I'm not very good at catching my own mistakes.  This morning, I painted with friends at the La Mesa Church. I made a bit of progress on my newest watercolor of Tiffanie drawing in the sand at White Sands National Monument. When finished it will fit into a 28 x 22 inch frame.
I also ordered the rest of my supplies for my art teacher workshops. I'm doing two for CAEA in Breckenridge, Colorado in mid October. I heard that my Collograph Printmaking workshop is already full. My second workshop is on building an icosahedron. The theme is the 60's - so, we will turn them into mirror balls. The prints will use disco dancers as subjects. In November, I'm doing a watercolor collage workshop for NMAE in Ruidoso, New Mexico. I'm waiting for word from NAEA about my proposed workshops in Seattle next March. I should hear sometime in December.

Quilt Winners Picked
We Have Quilt Winners (9/15):
Art in the School had help from Ryan Hickman, who carefully mixed all the quilt raffle tickets.  Ryan is the son of Lisa Hickman, a parent volunteer at Petroglyph Elementary.…and then he chose the winner!!  Congratulations to Jennifer Coston, winner of the beautiful, plush queen size Mexican star quilt!
And the baby quilt winner is Carl Uchwat!  Both winners were thrilled with their quilts. Many thanks to Frani Duncan who made and graciously donated her beautiful quilts to support our programs.  And thanks everyone who purchased a raffle ticket. We sincerely appreciate your support.

Almost Done
Another Rose (9/14):
I started another small rose in my new series of paintings (20 x 16 framed). I plan for nine watercolors because that's how many sheets of plexiglass I have. In the image below, I have not removed the liquid mask protecting the white paper.

Framing Watercolors (9/12):
No time to paint today. Today it was time to frame my watercolors for exhibits that are coming up. I've decided to put my first three small rose paintings (20 x 16) into the exhibit at the Wooden Cow gallery. I also framed the two watercolors that were selected by our juror in the NMWS Fall Show. Tomorrow, it's off to the museum for our first day of training of the year. Our schedule mirrors the school year - so we don't have training in the summer.

Progress
Painting With Friends (9/11):
At critique this morning, "Young Artist - Starry Night" was a real hit. And I heard that the boy's parents both love it too. Seems as if I caught his strong degree of concentration just right. Since his mother is such an accomplished artist, hearing of their approval was a real boost for me.
This morning, I also started another drawing of Tiffanie at White Sands National Monument. I only had time to add a bit of texture and then lay in a light blue wash over the sand. While the wash was drying, I worked on my third single rose in my planned series of nine. Each will fit into 20 x 16 inch frames.

My bride is making progress
on a new quilt.
Young Frani (9/9):
I want to thank Sister Mary for sending us a package of photos of my beautiful bride when she was younger. I did not meet her till half way through our senior year in high school. She sure was cute way back when. She is still a beauty.

More Rejects:
All three of my entries were rejected from the Kansas National Watercolor exhibit - so I guess I'll just frame my paintings for New Mexico - no shipping required since the show is in Albuquerque.

Close To Finish (9/8):
I'm close to being finished , but far from being satisfied. Lost edges are just not my thing and I have several edges in this painting that are way too course. In the end - it may be what it is. Any day now, I should hear if I got anything accepted into the Kansas show. Then I can cut mats and decide which frames to use.

Art Show in Lawrence:
My friend Jason Becker (bike across africa) is having an art show - September 24th in Downtown Lawrence, Kansas. If you are near there, I hope you can make it. See flier on the left for more info.

Thank You:
Catherine suggested a Starry Night background - I'm playing with the idea now - it's watercolor, and I don't use opaques - so I'd be lifting to create the image (more subtle that way).

Young Artist Dreaming  - My Solution

Critique Please:
After looking at the photo of
my painting of "Young Artist",
I want to darken the background behind the head and white bib. Can you give me any other suggestions, comments, whatever - or, do I just move on to another painting ?

Final Changes
Slow Progress (9/7):
Only a bit more progress on my watercolor today - because I had docent duty this morning and a honey do list to work on - first things first - of course. I had to ship off a couple more dolls and hang a new curtain in the laundry room.

Progress On "Young Artist" (9/6):
We went shopping this morning. My bride needed more material to back her newest quilts. We stopped for a delicious lunch at Los Cuates. I had recommended it to some friends from Kansas - so we had to test it out to see if it was good enough. After we got back, I added a few brushstrokes to my new watercolor "Young Artist".

Small Rose Paintings
Sunday Painting (9/5):
I'm listening to old time country music while painting.  I finished with my first two small rose paintings and put them aside. Now, I'm working on the watercolor of Jae Drummond's son. It would be really neat to have a third generation on Drummond artists.

My Next Watercolor
Watercolors Accepted (9/4):
Today, I received notice that two of my watercolors were accepted for the NMWS fall exhibition - Sorry, Tiffanie - the juror rejected the painting of you holding the pig. The juror did take my full sheet of the cactus flowers and the smaller one of a worker at the Ranchos church.

Working On New Watercolors:
This morning, before I left to paint with friends, I started  a drawing for a new watercolor titled "Young Artist" - it's a portrait of Jae Drummond's son James.  At my Saturday painters group - I spent my time working on my two small rose paintings - still not quite finished - I'm planning on doing a series of nine.

Not Quite Finished
ClustrMap (9/3):
It's interesting to look at the map counter on my website and see where my visitors are from. What I'll never know, is why the number of visitors varies so much from day to day. One day it's 42, another it's 76 and yesterday it was 148. Are these real people interested in seeing what I post. Or, perhaps Google searches for words like "music" or "painting". Or, are many of the hits from those spiders out there searching for whatever content they find - I'll never know.

Friday Painters:
Only 4 of us showed up for painting this morning - must be this holiday weekend thing. I guess it's the weekend to travel or stay home and entertain your house guests. I decided to paint smaller - here are two roses I started this morning - matted they will fit 20 x 16 inch frames.

Back to SW Music Painting (9/2):
A couple weeks back, I started to redo my watercolor of Michael Hearne's concert. The title is: "If I ain't happy here, I ain't happy nowhere" from the lyrics of "New Mexico Rain". I put the painting aside for awhile - now I'm working on it again. A full sheet of 300 lb Arches cost way too much to waste. And, if this one doesn't work out I can always paint on the back of it.

47 Years Together (9/1):
As of yesterday, August 31st, Frani and I are still together - after all these years. My beautiful bride and I will celebrate by walking another 3 miles each morning - just, trying to stay young.

Painting Looser:
Yesterday, I started on a painting of a bunch of roses. I'm trying to loosen up a bit with this painting. My painting are always too tight. I thought flowers would be the place to get looser.

....
My painting style is usually very tight and specific.  Way too many hard edges - with few lost edges. Perhaps with effort, I can change.
