| Back From Colorado (10/17): Frani and I just got back from 5 days in beautiful Colorado. We were the guests of the Colorado Art teachers (CAEA) at their fall conference in Breckenridge. I did two workshops for teachers at this years conference. We left at the crack of dawn to drive back home. We took the shortest and very scenic route more or less straight north from Albuquerque - as if you could drive straight anywhere through the mountains. Even with my Chevy Mini-Van loaded with all my stuff and Frani's souvenirs we still got over 26 mpg. The photo below was taken at 11,538 foot altitude on the way home this morning. |

| Docent Demos (10/11): This morning I did presentations, to my fellow docents, on two artists in our new exhibit. Charles Burchfield is an old favorite of mine. While, Clyde Connell was an artist I knew nothing about till now. |

| Las Cruces (10/10): We just returned from Las Cruces (230 miles to the south) - went to talk to Southern Chapter of NM Watercolor Society about entering Western Fed 2011 - SC membership growing down there - beautiful weather - still seems strange to see palm trees in New Mexico - Jan Hart traveled back from Costa Rica - she discussed color choices at the meeting - Jan is doing a workshop in Las Cruces. |

| Mary Ann Beckwith (10/8): I'm sure any watercolor artist would appreciate this detailed information on the process Mary Ann Beckwith uses in her paintings. The NMWS signature members had dinner with her last night at the Fine Arts building where she is teaching a four day workshop. Tonight, is the opening reception of the NMWS Fall Exhibition that she juried. I believe it is the highest quality show we have had. Her web site is: .... |

Watercolor (10/07): Don't miss the December issue of Watercolor Artist magazine. It has some interesting articles on painting snow. It also has a painting by Thomas Schaller (a facebook friend) on the cover. Local Artist Interviewed: Albuquerque Journal - Sunday, Oct 03, 2010 Catch This Artist's Eye, and You Might End Up Sitting for A Portrait
As an Albuquerque artist who favors portraits, Patricia Baca is on the lookout for subjects she wants to paint or draw.
She never knows when she'll meets a potential subject, as with an Indian woman selling jewelry in City Hall where Baca was working. With the woman's permission, Baca took her photograph. Using the photo as a model, Baca made a colored pencil portrait titled "Esther" — and it was a winner. "It was my first blue ribbon. That was at the State Fair in 2001," Baca said. Another encounter occurred a few summers ago while she was walking around Madrid, N.M. Baca saw a man selling fudge in front of a store. She got his OK to take his photograph ... if she bought fudge. She accepted the quid pro quo. The watercolor portrait, which she called "Mac," was juried into the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies' annual show held in May in Salt Lake City. "That was a big-time feather in my cap," Baca said. Of the 1,100 paintings seeking entry in the show, 100 were juried in. Of those 100, 12 were by New Mexico artists, she said. Three of Baca's watercolors have been juried in the New Mexico Watercolor Society's Fall Show, which opens next weekend at Expo New Mexico. About 100 paintings by artists in the continental United States will be in the show. One of Baca's pieces is a portrait, titled "Nafshia," which presents a woman in profile with a long, multicolored scarf draped on her head. Baca said the subject is a model at the Artists Studio in Hoffmantown Shopping Center. In painting the watercolor, Baca worked from a drawing and photograph of the model. "I go to the studio for life-drawing classes," she said. Another Baca watercolor in the fall show is "Waiting to Dance," a figurative painting displaying the backs of folkloric dancers in shimmering, colorful outfits. The third watercolor is "Hondo Valley Morning." She created that image after visiting Arroyo Hondo near Taos with fellow members of a painting critique group. "We go to different areas and take photographs. I came back and painted it in the studio (at home)," Baca said. The pastoral painting shows flowers and a fence in the foreground, an inviting meadow in the center with low mountains in the distance. Baca was introduced to the world of watercolor painting in the early 1980s when she took classes while working on a bachelor's degree in art degree at the University of New Mexico. She began painting nine years ago, jump-started by a watercolor workshop at Ghost Ranch. "It was the perfect storm: I had the money. I had the car. I had the vacation time. And I went," she said. Though working full time, she spent about four hours a night, four times a week, in the studio. Since her retirement from city government — she was a claims adjuster in risk management for 20 years — Baca has been putting in that much each week in the studio, but during the day. She's been juried into the Contemporary Hispanic Market in Santa Fe for the last four years and her work has been in the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair for seven years. "My portraits or figuratives win ribbons but don't sell. My landscapes sell," she said. Pat Baca has three watercolors in the NMWS Fall Exhibition - The opening reception is Friday, October 8th, 6 - 8 p.m. at the Fine Arts Building, Expo New Mexico, use entrance at San Pedro and Copper NE. Exhibit runs Oct. 9, through Oct. 30. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thurs-Sun only ....

| Frani Watched Todays Balloons: I got my beautiful bride up this morning to watch the balloons. She sat in the back yard with a cup of coffee and took in the show. She yelled at me as I was getting my cup of coffee, "Here comes the sun". |

| Winds Blowing Our Way (10/6): This morning, Wednesday, the hot air balloons floated right over our house. A few landed in the park behind our house. I posted a few of the 1000 plus photos I took today on my facebook page. |

| NMWS Fall Show (10/5): I helped check in the paintings for the NMWS Fall Show -it's going to be one of our best ever. The opening reception is Friday night from 6 to 8 pm at the Fine Arts building at Expo New Mexico. |

Painting Way Over Done (10/4): I believe I've picked and picked this painting to death - it's way over worked - but I'm stopping and moving on - the title is "If I ain't happy here, I ain't happy nowhere" from the lyrics of "New Mexico Rain" by Michael Hearne. |

| Yupo Demo: Mary Ann Beckwith did a great demo painting on yupo at the watercolor meeting tonight. She applied a thin layer of halloween spider web before she painted. |

Watching Balloons At Home (10/3): I stayed home to watch the balloons this morning. I shot almost 1000 photos from either our backyard or from the park behind the house. Several balloons went right over our house or landed in the park. I few even landed in neighborhood streets. |

| Balloon Fiesta Starts (10/2): I got up at 3:30 am to drive over to catch a shuttle to the balloon launch site. Driving there with thousands of other cars would be a big mistake. Waiting in line and on the bus I visited with visitors from New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Hawaii. I shot 914 photos, by 8:30, before getting back on the bus (with my breakfast buritto) to return to my car. |
||||
| David Chavez Demo: I left the balloons early enough to get to my Saturday morning painting group. David Chavez was giving a demo about his technique of painting watercolors on Aquaboard. I'm not sure I'll try it right away - but, I learned a lot. David even showed us how he softens the edges (of clouds) while the painting is under water - literally. |

Balloons are testing the cool
air - Albuquerque's Annual Balloon Fiesta starts this Saturday.
I'll be there to get photos to use in my watercolors.

| Finishing An Old Painting: This morning I got out an old unfinished painting. A full sheet of 300 lb Arches is just too expensive to waste. It may turn out after all. I do need to work on Michael Hearne's face. "If I ain't happy here, I ain't happy nowhere"
