June means I'm headed up to Taos to paint - Look for me at the Sagebrush Inn

Balloons Over Our House - May 30, 2010

............................................................... ........................................................................................................................................ ...............................................................
Photo of Me in Taos (6/30):
That's a photo of "me" reflected in the window on the left. I was shooting a photo of my friend and fellow artist "Tim" (from Wyoming) painting in his room at the Sagebrush Inn in Taos. Tim leaves "Hugs and Kisses" on the window ledge for passerbyes. Tim has been attending the watercolor workshop in Taos even longer that I have.

Rain in Albuquerque (6/28):
We had a nice rain this afternoon in Albuquerque. If it was at least a tenth of an inch - that would bring our total for this year at two whole inches. This has been an especially dry year and any moisture is welcome.
Taos Watercolor Workshop (6/27):
Yesterday, I created five web pages about our fantastic week at the Sagebrush Inn in Taos, New Mexico. The pages are all linked together starting at:
 http://www.taospaint.com/TaosWS2010/SagebrushA.html

I've been driving to Taos to take part in this watercolor workshop since 1985. It is sponsored by Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado. If you are interested in taking this workshop - contact Judy Jones in the Art Department at Adams State: jejones@adams.edu

New Watercolor Started (6/26):
I began a new (full sheet) watercolor yesterday morning. It's a painting of yellow cactus blooms from our back yard here in Albuquerque.
I also mailed off my entries to the 25th Grand National in Jackson, Mississippi. Last October, Mississippi was the first national watercolor exhibition I got accepted into outside of New Mexico.
Watercolors Off to Taos (6/25):
Early next week I'm shipping two watercolors off to Taos. They were juried into the Taos National Exhibition of American Watercolor XIV. This years Taos exhibition was open to signature members only. The exhibit will again be in the beautiful Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, New Mexico. The exhibit runs August 14th through September 29th. Both of my watercolors are from our trip to New Orleans last October.

More Taos Watercolors:
I took photos of five more of the watercolors that I painted last week while in Taos. I'm starting some varied experiments. The poppy painting was built up with a white on white collage before I painted on it. The clouds are my start at trying to paint these fantastic New Mexico skies. My watercolor of Chimayo was done on location. The rose is a much more traditional approach for me and the Hollyhocks were done at Frani's request.
Today, I got another rejection notice - this time from the Oklahoma Watercolor Society. Now I know which watercolors I can enter into shows in New Mexico, Mississippi and Kansas.

Noon Clouds Over Sandia (6/23):
I took a photo, today, of the clouds over our mountain at high noon (MDT). I also finished the July issue of Brushstrokes (NMWS Newsletter) and sent it to some friends to proof read. I need others eyes to check on my work. This issue of the Brushstrokes will include the prospectus for the NMWS Fall Exhibition. It is an "open" show - for any artist in the 48 states. The artist need not be a member of NMWS to enter. We don't have a meeting or a newsletter in August. I plan to include the 2011 WFWS prospectus in the September issue. An artist must be a member of one of the eleven watercolor socities to submit entries to Western Fed.

Another Rejection means New Opportunities (6/21):
All three of my entries into a juried exhibition in Southern Colorado were rejected. Now I can decide what I'm going to enter into the NMWS Fall show. The NMWS Fall juried exhibition is an open show - meaning that any artist in the 48 states can enter - they do not even have to be a member of NMWS. The deadline is Friday, August 13th. CLICK HERE to download a prospectus.

Yesterdays Sunset (6/20):
I came home yesterday to a beautiful sunset. I took photos of the sunset in the west and against the mountains to the east.

Photos of Jason Becker

Jason's Ride Across Africa:
The local newspaper in Lawrence, Kansas (Lawrence Journal World) had an article about Jason's long bike ride. I'm posting the text below.

Lawrence resident Jason Becker best describes himself as “adventurous.” The former Wichita high school art teacher has worked his entire life to help others and to venture outside his comfort zone. That effort would never be more evident than during his latest excursion.
“For a couple of years I had just been wanting a change and I wanted something new,” said Becker, who is a lifelong cyclist. The change he sought took Becker to the Internet, where he searched for the longest and most intense bike trip in the world. He’d had experience riding long distances but never anything like this latest journey. “We did a mountain bike trip up to Mount Everest base camp four years ago and saw Tibet and Nepal in the process,” said Becker. “That was the thing that I had done to date.” That changed when Becker stumbled upon the Tour D’Afrique.
Becker quit his teaching job, sold his house to pay for the $10,000 trip, moved to Lawrence and spent three months preparing for a ride that’s about 7,500 miles — from Cairo, Egypt, to Cape Town, South Africa. “I didn’t think it was crazy, I just thought it was adventurous and that’s something that I’ve always considered myself,” Becker said. “This seemed like the perfect fit for me.”
Becker couldn’t make the expedition on two wheels without helping others, too. He picked up Project Rwanda as a charity and has contributed more than $1,500 since he first pushed off in Egypt earlier this year. Becker’s goal is $3,000. The trip was four months long, through rugged terrain and villages with little to no infrastructure. About 60 cyclists participated. Becker has a hard time picking out just a couple of memorable moments, but says his eyes were opened by the scenery and the kindness of the people. “Namibia by far was I think the most stunningly beautiful place and I think it had to do with just the vastness of it,” said Becker. “You can just see this genuine kindness and willingness to give and beautiful smiles. I guess I’m trying to make them sound like they’re different than we are and they’re not.”
Becker was one of only 12 riders who didn’t use any transportation or help along the way. That feat earned him the designation E.F.I., which stands for Every Fabulous Inch. Four months into the trip, his mountain bike carried Becker into Cape Town, South Africa, completing a trip he still thinks about almost daily. “I talk with other people who were on the trip and we miss it,” said Becker. “I miss the people.”
Becker will now use his art skills to re-create the trip in paintings, jewelry and sketches. He plans to hold an art show and pass part of the profits along to Project Rwanda. For more information about Becker’s charity, log onto http://www.projectrwanda.org
Back From Taos (6/19):
I just got home from my week of painting in Taos, New Mexico. On the way home I stopped a few times to shoot photos - especially of rafts running the white water on the Rio Grande. I did spend time walking in downtown Santa Fe. There is a great exhibit at the Georgia O'Keefe museum that is a must to see. Below is a photo, from last night, of artists watching a slide show I put together in my studio/hotel room at the Sagebrush Inn.

Some of My New Watercolors:
I completed nine watercolors in my week at the Sagebrush Inn. I'm only posting three of them here on my blog for now.

Another Fundraiser (6/12):
Art in the School is having more that just another Fundraiser. This one gives the real reason for the "FUN" in the word fundraiser. This event is called "Clash Couture" - A Live Fashion Competition Behind the Runway.  Clash Couture is an ultramodern fashion show where teams of make-up artists, hair stylists, and designers compete head-to-head to create a head-to-toe look (using unconventional items) live in front of the audience who chooses the winner. Admission is $20/$10 for students with an ID. It has been arranged for KOB-FM to have a live remote broadcast at the event and 30 radio spots run during the week before.  Ticket sales on the AIS website.  The Art Center Design College has interior design students planning the décor at the event.  There will be a dj, open bar, snacks.  The goal is to have 500 attend and raise $10,000 for AIS !! This event will be a hoot. By tickets online at: http://www.artintheschool.org/

Donated Watercolor (6/11):
Yesterday morning I dropped off a framed watercolor for a silent auction. Money raised goes to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It's a full sheet painting of cactus blooms that I painted 4 years ago.

Jason (6/10):
Jason will not be painting in Taos this summer but, he did post a photo of himself riding his bike through Africa.  Jason, we will be talking about you next week in Taos.

Morning Balloons:
A couple balloons floated over our house this morning. Just another reason to live in New Mexico.
Missouri Watercolor Society (6/9):
The Missouri Watercolor Society puts it's annual national juried exhibition on line at
 http://www.mowsart.com/Gallery.aspx?path=~/Galleries/National2010
This year I was fortunate to have a painting accepted into Missouri Watercolor Societies national exhibition. It felt good to be in the same exhibition with respected watercolor artists like Dean Mitchell, John Salminen and Jane Hofstetter. My painting is now back home in Albuquerque - but it's up on the MWS website.

Bear Quilt Progress (6/8):
My bride is making good progress on her bear quilt. When this one is finished it goes on our bed.

Roses (6/7):
What would my roses be without Frani to dead head them (cut off the old blooms) for me. It's a record heat out there - but, she loves the heat. I'll stay inside where it's cool and work on photos of my roses to paint from.

Keeping the Roses Beautiful

Enchanted Landscapes:
Tonight, I watched a program on New Mexico's Public TV station. "LANDSCAPES OF ENCHANTMENT" features ten of the most important landscape painters of New Mexico and their interpretation of the usual and unusual beauty of the state. They talk about their love of this place: the stark contrasts of the sky, the light & the land; why they came here & never left; and how their artistry takes root in the arid landscape. LANDSCAPES OF ENCHANTMENT was narrated by Santa Fe resident actor Ali McGraw.

Successful Art Sale (6/5):
Last night's art sale was a big success thanks to the people who came by to get great deals on the art. But more importantly, it was a success because of the generous nature of the many artists who gave so freely of their creations. The children in our after school art programs are the ones who will benefit from everyone's help.

Two Watercolors Accepted:
I have two watercolors on exhibition in Georgia. The exhibition was arranged by The Art School in Sandy Springs. They will hang in The Gallery at Paper Mill Village in Marietta, Georgia. My shipping box arrived a day late. I hope it is waiting to be opened for the exhibit. One of my shipping boxes was just returned from a show in Missouri. Another box is in Alabama. I'm not selling paintings, or winning any prize money - but I am helping to fund watercolor societies around the country and helping FedEx with their balance sheet.

Win Frani's Beautiful Quilt:
Help support our after school art program (Art in the School) by buying a $10 chance on one of Frani's quilts. You can even use pay pal or send a check. This is the second quilt auction we have held. The first quilt is gone - but it wasn't made by my beautiful bride. Now you have a chance to win one made by Frani. In fact there is a second prize this time - a baby quilt, also made by Frani,  which is the second prize.

Mexican Stars Quilt

Only 100 tickets will be sold – so your chance of winning one of these quilts is excellent – a one in 50 chance!  When you buy a raffle ticket or make a donation to Art in the School this year, the benefit to children will be doubled due to a special challenge grant from the Lumpkin Family Foundation.  If we raise $10,000 this year, they will match that with another $10,000!

Thank You:
The tickets for the Frani's quilt are going fast. I was told that 10 quilt raffle tickets were sold in the first 24 hours just from friends of mine on the web. We are making progress toward our goal of $10,000 to match the Lumpkin grant. I also heard that we picked up two separate $1000 donations last week and made $900 on our garage sale. As well as a group of local artists who are giving $500 and a high school drama club which raised another $400. It will all look even better after the art sale planned for June Fourth. The after school art programs will be healthy next year thanks to all the generous people out there.
