Sandia Mountains from our Backyard August 1st, 2010
............................................................... ........................................................................................................................................ ...............................................................
47 Years Together (8/31):
Still together after all these years. My beautiful bride and I will celebrate by walking another 3 miles this morning - just, trying to stay young.
Synesthesia (8/29):
Today, is the public opening of Synesthesia at the Albuquerque museum. The full title is: SENSORY CROSSOVERS: SYNESTHESIA IN AMERICAN ART.  The exhibit runs from August 29th till 2010, January 2nd, 2011. We went to the members opening on Friday night because we will be attending the opening reception of the watercolor show today at the Jewish Community Center. I hope everyone gets a chance to see both shows.
I was quite impressed by the new exhibit called "Synesthesia". The concept is art based upon the senses, like smells and sounds. There are 54 objects by various artists like Man Ray, Joseph Stella, Georgia O'Keeffe, Arthur Dove. I use to use a poster of Arthur Doves "Fog Horns" in my teaching days. But, I am most drawn to the works of Charles Butchfield. I'm doing a presentation, for fellow docents, on Butchfield and another artist in October. This will be fun.

"Bury Brother" Finished (8/28):
This afternoon the board of the New Mexico Art Education Association met to discuss plans for our Fall conference in Ruidoso. Membership in NMAEA is way up and we are planning a great conference for New Mexico art teachers. The dates are November 5th and 6th.  Details will be posted at: http://www.newmexicoarteducators.org/

When I got home, I finished my new watercolor of Tiffanie trying to bury her brother Timothy at White Sands National Monument. It is painted on a full sheet of 300 lb Arches rough watercolor paper. I applied some acrylic molding paste, with a pallet knife, before I started painting. That and a bit of salt helped give the feel of sand. Matted and framed the painting will be 28 x 36 inches.

Painting Progress (8/27):
This morning, I made some progress on my watercolor of Tiffanie trying to bury her brother at White Sands. I think it's going to be a good one that has an obvious story behind it. I also shipped off my watercolor "Duct Tape Tuba" to this years Grand National in Mississippi.  My watercolor will hang in the Mississippi Art Museum until January.

Hanging Art (8/26):
I helped hang our watercolor show at the Jewish Community Center today. We have an opening reception this Sunday from 2 to 5 pm. This is always a good show and has been a good selling location in past years.

Painting Sand (8/25):
I'm going to add some texture to this watercolor that I started this morning.  I'm working from photos I took of Tiffanie trying to bury her brother at White Sands.  This time I'm working on a full sheet of 300 lb Arches rough paper. After I lighten my drawing, I plan to apply a bit of acrylic molding paste to create the rougher areas of the sand before I add any water or pigment.

Steps Along the Way:
I started out with a light wet-n-wet wash over the sand, while liquid frisket protects the figures and a bit of acrylic molding paste simulates the texture of the disturbed sand - this one will be fun. I threw some salt in for effect as well. Below - shows the painting right after I removed the frisket.

Back From Santa Fe (8/23):
Yesterday, we drove up to Santa Fe.  We went to the older traditional flea market just north of the opera first - then toured Indian Market - on the way home we stopped at a recently opened flea market called just "Flea" on the grounds of the old Santa Fe Downs racetrack - it was late, so flea was closing down - but, we will go back.
At Indian Market, I ran into an old friend from KC. It was good to see Harriet again. We were both art teachers back in KC. She was helping out Jody and Susan Folwell with their booth. They are Santa Clara potters. Suzie recently got married and we met the lucky guy, Harrison. They went to New Zealand for the wedding.

Finished Painting (8/21):
I finished my new painting of "Tiffanie Drawing" - it has been suggested that the shadow be lightened in places - I'll live with it for a while first.
This Mornings Progress (8/20):
Tiffanie knows that I've sold watercolors of her before. Now she says she expects a cut. I guess that happens when you get older.

August Roses (8/19):
Here are photos I took yesterday afternoon of roses in my backyard. The hot weather is beginning to fade and roses love the cool nights in Albuquerque.

More Dolls & Some Painting (8/18):
Yesterday I posted three more dolls on my bride's e-bay store.

Starting Over:
I decided to start over on my music painting - this time I doing it larger (a full sheet) and on 300 lb rough paper - I'm starting loose to create a mood - later I'll add the details - but not too much detail, I hope.

E-Bay Store (8/17):
Shipped off three dolls yesterday. My bride thinks sales are going slow - I think they are fine. Everything you post is not going to sell quickly. I'll shoot photos of more dolls to post today.

SYNESTHESIA (8/16):
The next big exhibit at the Albuquerque Museum is called
SENSORY CROSSOVERS:  SYNESTHESIA IN AMERICAN ART
it opens on August 29, 2010 an continues until January 2, 2011. I'm looking forward to this exhibit because it has images from many of my favorite artists. Artists like Arthur Dove, Charles Burchfield and many others will be represented in an exhibit that asks - can the visual arts express what the other senses experience ?  Synesthesia, meaning "with feeling," refers in its simplest terms to sensory fusions or crossovers. Its most common—but by no means its only—documented manifestation in the visual arts has been that of "colored hearing," the ability of sound, especially music, to call up certain chromatic associations.
When teaching art, in Middle School, I often used "Fog Horns" by Arthur Dove as an exemplar. Now we have it coming to our museum.

Back From Taos (8/15):
We drove up to Taos and back yesterday. We went to Taos for the opening of the Taos National Watercolor Exhibit at the Millicent Rogers Museum. I have two paintings in the juried national members show there this year. We walked around the plaza and visited galleries - but proudly bought nothing - watching the budget right now. Of course we ate at Michael's Kitchen before driving back - I did stop to take a pic of the sunset on the drive back - Taos and back on 1/2 a tank (26.4 MPG) not bad for a 7 passenger minivan.
My two watercolors will be on display until September 29, 2010 at the beautiful
Millicent Rogers Museum. in Taos, New Mexico.

"If I ain't happy here, I ain't happy nowhere" (8/13):
I might have finished my newest watercolor this morning. I really need to live with it for a few days to decide what it needs - or perhaps just start over.

....
In the past 24 hours, 109 people visited my web pages. Some days it's a few more, other days it's like only 40 or 50 or so. I often wonder if those visits are from real people or just those computer spiders crawling around the web sampling content. The counter on my website just records how many hits I get.

Painting Music (8/12):
I'm going to attempt to paint New Mexico music. My source is the singer song-writer Michael Hearne. I'm working off a photo I took at a recent concert South by Southwest did here in Albuquerque.
The title to my watercolor will be
If I ain't happy here, I ain't happy nowhere based on the song lyrics of "New Mexico Rain" by Michael Hearne.
.....
Lyrics to "New Mexico Rain":

Well the smoke cuts the lights in this old honky tonk bar,
I'm thinking where I'd rather be
Maybe chasing senoritas down in old Mexico
Or maybe standing a the edge of the sea

If I had the money,
than I'd tell you honey,
we'd be on that first plane to Spain.
But as long as we're here, the answer is clear
We'll dance in the New Mexico Rain
New Mexico Rain, it's hot down in Texas
Oh, and I call this my home
If I ain't happy here, I ain't happy no where.
New Mexico Rain when my mind starts to roam

You know the lights of the city,
keep calling my name
It's just a giant hotel
its' all along for main street, with a check out time on the door
Oh if I had the money, I'd tell you honey,
we'd be on that New Deli train,
But as long as we're here, Lord the answer is clear
We'll waltz in the New Mexico Rain

New Mexico rain
It's hot down in Texas
and I call this my home
If ain't happy here, I ain't happy no where
New Mexico rain when my mind starts to roam.

I've been drinking all day
with a man at the bar,
and he sure seem unhappy to me
he tells me he's going no where,
and he's going there fast,
and he envies this life that i lead,
Well If I had the money,
well I tell you honey, I'd keep him from going insane,
You know there's one thing for sure,
there just ain't no cure,
Like a waltz in the New Mexico Rain

New Mexico Rain,
It's hot down in Texas,
and I call this my home,
If I ain't happy here, I ain't happy nowhere,
New Mexico rain when my mind starts to roam

If I ain't happy here, I ain't happy nowhere,
New Mexico rain when my mind starts to roam

Decisions (8/11):
This morning, I decided which three paintings to display at the Jewish Community Center. The JCC exhibition is not a juried show, it's open to all members of the New Mexico Watercolor Society. The NMWS has a committee called "Art Around Albuquerque" which finds locations for our members to display their art. JCC has a large space, we have an opening reception that is well attended. This venue has been quite good for sales in past years.

Three More Dolls (8/10):
I took photos of three more dolls for my bride today and added them to her e-bay store. By the end of this week she will have sold nine dolls. She thinks things are too slow - I think she is selling quite well.

? Finished ?
Progress On My New Watercolor (8/9):
This morning, I got back to working on my newest watercolor of a pink and white rose. I'm totally out of stretched watercolor paper now. So, tomorrow I'd better soak and stretch some sheets of Arches.

Some Progress

To Crop or Not Crop ???
I'm considering putting my rose in a smaller frame - so the question is, does it look better cropped or not ?

Car Tags (8/7):
Today, I got my brides car inspected so we can buy new tags. We want to get the new centennial plates. New Mexico turns 100 in 2012. The new plates are turquoise of course. In Albuquerque our vehicles need to pass a pollution test so we don't end up like LA. We want to be able to see our mountain when we look out our windows. Tags in New Mexico cost $50 per year and I always get two year tags. It seems cheap after having to pay an annual "car tax" (property tax) back in Kansas. No car tax here, and the sales tax on a new car is only 3 percent. I'd love to drive a hybrid - but, our cars are paid for and we don't want any payments.

Friday Painters (8/6):
I'm headed out this morning to paint with a group of friends at the Unitarian church. While I'm there, I'll also shoot photos of several artist's watercolors for digital entries into the NMWS Fall Show. Later, I'm shipping off another doll for my bride. Currently, she has 10 dolls and 3 quilts listed on her e-bay store.

I made a bit of progress this morning on my newest watercolor of the "Pink & White Rose". I'm painting on hot press paper, which I'm not use to. It's smooth surface gives a different feel to the painting. This morning, I also shot digital photos of twenty other watercolors so other artists could enter their creations into the NMWS Fall Show.  I also shipped my brides latest doll of to Canada. That's the second doll we have sent to Canada.  Others went to Russia, Australia, New Zealand - it seems like people in other countries have money now. Shipping overseas is expensive.

The painting, on the left, still has the liquid mask on it.
The later version, on the right, has had the liquid mask removed
and a bit more work done on it.

Back to Painting (8/5):
After shooting multiple photos of about two dozen dolls - I decided to get back to painting watercolors - I'm starting with a pink and white rose from my garden. It doesn't look like much right now - but, I like to start by throwing some color down to unify the composition.

Dolls and Watercolors (8/4):
Yesterday, I got my watercolor back from the watercolor show in Alabama. I unpacked the box and put my painting of "Duct Tape Tuba" into the box ready to be shipped off to Mississippi. My airfloat boxes are starting to show wear - but, are holding up well.
I also shot photos of more dolls for my bride to sell on e-bay. She has sold seven so far, but our closets are still full. Many of her dolls have never been out of their original boxes until now so I could shoot photos of them. You can check out the her dolls that have been posted so far at:
Mississippi Watercolor (8/3):
I just received notice that Juror Judi Coffey selected my watercolor "Duct Tape Tuba" to hang in the Mississippi Watercolor Society Grand National to be held at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, Mississippi. The opening reception is on Sunday afternoon, October 3rd from 2 to 4 pm. This is my second year getting into this show.
This is one of the paintings I did from our trip to New Orleans last October. We had gone to the opening in Jackson, Mississippi and decided to spent a few extra days in New Orleans. Just walking through the French Quarter gives an artist loads of ideas to paint.

Docent Training Movie:
Yesterday morning, I was video taped talking to a group of students at the museum. This was the last video of a series we are making to help train new docents. This time I was asked to do everything the "correct way". A few weeks ago, I did a different section of the museum the "wrong way". Everything was filmed from three different angles to be edited together later. I'm sure my goofs will be left on the cutting room floor. But, since it's video I guess it really goes into the trash.

Kansas Watercolor Entries (8/2):
Two days ago, I mailed off my entries in the Kansas Watercolor Society National Exhibition 2010. The exhibit runs from November 19th, 2010 through January 9th, 2011 - the juror is Janet Walsh. I await her decision.

New Mexico Watercolor Entries:
I just sent off my entries for the New Mexico Watercolor Society Fall Show. The Juror this fall is Mary Ann Beckwith. I should hear about her decision around the 1st of September. The exhibit opens Friday, October 8th. Next, I need to decide what to put on display for the NMWS show at the Jewish Community Center. It's not juried so I can decide what to display. I'll probably choose florals since they might sell better. The only other juried show I plan to enter this year is the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. I have till mid November to get several paintings finished for that juried show.

Triplets Headed Home:
Our grandkids are on their way back home to Kansas. We kept up a full schedule while they were here in New Mexico. We took in three movies, went to the zoo one day and to Explora another. We even shopped in Old Town. One day we visited Chaco Canyon and another day we drove up to Bandelier to explore the ruins there. Our longest drive was South to see Carlsbad Caverns. While there we decided to stop by at Whitesands on the way back.
