As a watercolor artist in love
with the magnificent light of the high Taos plateau in Northern New Mexico,
for 20 years I have driven there to paint each summer. I find myself painting
the famous Ranchos Church, in Taos, again and again. These three paintings
show the annual adobe restoration process. Each June, Parishioners give
of their time to restore this enormous Adobe church to its original splendor.
One painting called the Mudder,
1990, shows a man who, took his vacation time, to drive from Michigan to
help relive his childhood memories of Taos. Another, titled Ranchos
Restoration, 2002, shows how modern technology
is employed to assist in finishing the higher surfaces of the church walls.
My earliest painting, Ranchos
Repairs,1985, shows a crew of volunteers
preparing the adobe material to repair the historic church. Like a watercolor
painting, adobe structures are created and molded by hand. Each is an original
work of art and creating both is a true religious experience. Since I am
now retired from teaching, I decided to move to New Mexico to devote more
time to painting in this magical place.
